My gg grandfather, William Gordon, married Mary Anne Heaslip in 1858 in Ballymachugh.  I would be interested in any information on either family.  I know William and Mary Anne moved to Lancashire in the UK sometime before 1881 but would love to know more about their earlier life together and that of their families.

  • I would start by ordering a copy of their marriage certificate as this should give you their townlands (addresses), occupations and parents names and occupations all of which may help to trace them back. The marriage was registered in Cavan town 1858 Volume 3, page 437. (Bride is under Haeslip, possibly a typo). You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for €4 (euros).  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can’t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don’t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church which should be on the certificate, (unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

  • Hello Elwyn.   Many thanks for this advice which I have today followed.  I now look forward to receiving a copy of the marriage certificate and then, hopefully, I will be able to discover a little bit more about this branch of my family.     Regards.  Lynette
