Looking for info on Conaty family.   My gr gr grandmother Julia Conaty (Born in Ireland 1822?) and died in July 1862, in Taunton, Massachusetts.  Her tombstone reads, " in loving memory of Julia Lynch, by her brother James Conaty. Born Portclare Parish of Crosserlough, Cavan, Irleand. 40 years old."   She was married to my gr gr grandfather Bartholomew Lynch (Born 1820?) in Irleand and Died in Taunton, Massachusetts in July of 1904. Ib his obituary it states one of his pallbearers was a Francis Conaty, who I believe must have been  his wife's relative.  Have no record as to where they were married. His Father's name was Lawrence and His mother was Rose.  Julia and Bartholomew had 4 children, Rose, Susan, Ellen, and Mary. all born in the US.  Any information would be helpful.  thank you in advance.

  • Hi

Thank you for your message. Do you have any additional information concerning these indivisuals which may assist others in furthering your research? Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information.

Some sites/resources which may be helpful are:

  • Hi, the Connaty families are listed in the census of 1821 in Tedehan Townland, Crosserlough parish, Cavan.

Our Gillroy family of Mount Pallas Townland just to the east hailed orinallly from Tedehan Townland.

My great great grandmother was Brigid Conaty 1836-1902. She married Eugene Owen Galligan. Their daughter my great grandmother was Julia Galligan 1864-1942 who married Patrick J Lynch. They where from Kilnaleck and Toneylion  Cavan, Ireland.  They had a combined general store and tavern there. Julia Galligan had a brother Father Laurence Galligan 1868-1933. I dont know who Brigid Conaty parents where.  I wonder if Julia Conaty and Brigid Conaty were sisters?  We both have Galligans and Lynchs in our trees.

I still cannot establish the relationship, but Bishop Thomas James Conaty (b Cavan and emigrated to Taunton w his parents, who had several more children and Catholic priests while there) was the son of Patrick and Alice Lynch. In old news articles, he is visiting my McMahon relatives in Bradford, McKean, Pa and mentions his nieces McMahon in Scranton. My husband's ggrandfather, Thomas McMahon, was married to Mary Lynch. I have a hunch that Alice and Mary are sisters.

The parallels are there. I have done extensive research.
