  • Hi Denise, glad to see you are making headway in your research & you have now found your townland, When you say "apparently joined the British Army?, have you consulted their records, was he in UK or ireland at the time, if in UK you should find him on some of their Census records.

It is easier if you reply to the original correspondence, that way I can see what I originally advised you to search for.

I had a quick look on  the census & searched for the townland Dingin & it is a townland outside  Kingscourt, Co Cavan, on what record did it say "Dingin"& was Elizabeth's residence the same, in the census there were no Nixons or O'Reillys on it, but it is in an area where there are lots of O'Reillys, the townland must be small as there were only 3 houses in it in 1911, same in 1901

I looked for Nixons in the surrounding area in 1901 & there is a Jane Nixon in Taghart, which would not be too far away from Dingin - see this link, perhaps you have this already & it looks like her sister married Nelson & they are a presbyterian family, does this fit with anything else you have?

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Taghart/Derry/10…

I can by all means show you around the area, if you plan on visiting.

Hope this helps you further & do please reply to this thread as you find more information.  Best Wishes Carmel O'Callaghan

  • Hi, thanks for replying. I have just started researching this Ancestor. One of his children married and had my great grandmother.I am just going on the information recieved from a  relation researching this side of the family. I am researching Nixon, but also Turnock/Turner{ who funny enough also came from county Cavan} who married my great grandmother.I am a nee, Turner, I would say the Nixon side doing the research would have had a birth cert for Adam Nixon,i assume they got Dingin from that. They had most of their children in Ireland except 2.The children born in Ireland were Ellen,James,Elizabeth,Mathew Anne,Margaret,Theresa. He came to NZ on the Ship Ramillies in 1847,47th Regiment.I think they must have been Catholic as buried in the Onehunga Catholic Cemetery NZ. I think i tmay have been Elizabeth O Reilly that came from Dingin.I have just started doing My family tree and luckily have come accross other family members doing the same on both sides so it has given me a great start and help, so i dont know alot about how to do thing yet. So far the info i have has come from others and my perserverence on the internet. Thanks so much for replying and helping.I will have to get on to the Turnocks from there as well.I will perservere. And i do have term plans of visiting Ireland and England.

  • Hi Denise,

I searched the Tithe applotments again for the townland of Dingin, & it turned up here

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

Alas still no Nixons or O'Reillys.

Give me what details you have on the Turners & I may be luckier with them.

  • Do you have a date of birth for any of the children born in Ireland, preferable the youngest, & I will do searches for suitable registrations.
