James McEvoy (son of James) married Catherine Donohoe (daughter of James) in 1891(?) in Cavan Cathedral.  They had 13 children.  My grandmother, Bridget Agnes, was born on 1 Jan. 1902.  Her birth record states her name is James, an error.  I am having a difficult time finding birth information on James McEvoy.  I know his father's name is James because of the marriage certificate.  My grandmother mentioned he was an only child.  If you have information on McEvoy's I would appreciate your help.  Thank you.

  • Hi

Your message caught my attention because I am researching the McEvoy name for a client who has Crofton relatives in County Mayo. His ancestor, Timothy Crofton (b. abt. 1795) married Sarah McEvoy (b. abt. 1800). They lived in the Newport area in Burrishoole Parish. There are almost no McEvoys or Croftons in the area, so I'm thinking they came from elsewhere. McEvoy is a relatively uncommon name so that may be in your favour.

You mention that James McEvoy and Catherine Donohoe were married in Cavan Cathedral, which is the seat of the Bishop of Kilmore and the mother church for the Diocese of Kilmore. You would be searching Roman Catholic records in this diocese. This was likely Catherine's home church (or near to it), but not necessarily where the McEvoys lived. Now you need to narrow the location down. Kilmore (civil) Parish is the same boundaries as the Catholic parish so that is a good thing.

You don't mention where the family lived when Bridget Agnes was born, or where Jame's (or his father's) residence is on marriage certificate. This is important information to include.

You can email me directly if you wish.
