My direct ancestors wer Daniel Lynch and Margaret Clark(e).  They lived around Cavan around 1820 -1840.  Daniel was a farmer. Margaret is believed to have died before 1841.

They had 3 daughters Elizabeth (Betsy) born 1822,  Margaret born 1825 and Mary 1826.

Elizabeth (16 yrs)  married James Flynn in 1838 and had two sons James born 1839 and Edward born 1841.

In 1841 the 3 daughters including Elizabeth's husband James and their 2 sons departed Ireland on the vessel "Runnymede" for Sydney Australia.

Margaret Lynch (my GGG grandmother) was baptised at Drumgoon.

I was wondering if anyone had futher information on the Lynch and Clark(e) family.

  • Dear Don,

I would love to help you, have lots of Clarkes & Lynchs in my family, but dont get excited, there are a lot of them around.

Civil registration started in 1864, so that is the stumbling block..when you say Margaret Lynch was baptised at Drumgoon, do you have a copy of the certificate?  Basically I am looking for a townland, which is the place they came from.  Drumgoon would be the parish that would cover 3 churches, assuming they are catholic.

    Regards Carmel

  • Carmel,

I am sorry,  Lynch and Clarke family  I believe are from Cavan.  I thought I had a Baptism for Drumgorn for Margaret Clark but I am mistaken.    She was born in Cavan though.  Margaret Lynch and her sisters came to Australia in 1841.  Their father stayed behind but their mother was shown as deceased on shipping records.  Daniel Lynch was a farmer.

It was another ancester of mine - Bridget Callery (GG Grandmother)  who was baptised at Drumadorn, Cloone Roman Catholic, Leitrim on 11 Feb 1830.

She came to Australia as a female famine orphan and  Arrived on "INCHINNAN" - famine Orphan Girl Ship to Australia. Sailed from Plymouth 4 Nov 1848. Parents were listed as Edward and Nelly = both dead. Religion RC and the record showed that she could not read or write.

    My apologies

  • I have an Owen Clarke married Honoria (Onney) Lynch in 1868 at Cootehill. One of their sons, Francis was my ggrandfather.
Francis lived at Lisatavin, Larah, Stradone, Cavan.
I am unsure where Onney Lynch was from but she had a sister, Anne.
Thomas John Clarke and Thomas Lynch were sponsors at my grandfather's and his sisters births respectively.
    Any connections?
    cheers,
    kath
