In his RIC records you will just find that John?s place of birth was recorded as Co. Sligo. However in order to be accepted into the RIC, he had to be interviewed by the local RIC Inspector. That man?s name will be on his RIC file (or it should be). If you research that Inspector?s own record, you should see where he was stationed in 1868/69. That will then tell you the general area of Sligo that John came from. That might reduce the search to a manageable number of parishes to search.

You can get John?s RIC records from several sources: the National Archives in Dublin, National Archive sin Kew, London and the PSNI also have a copy. You can get that from the PSNI museum in Belfast.

Hi and thanks for replying. When I found John's Dublin death record a couple of years ago, it was then that I discovered that he was an RIC pensioner, so I contacted the PSNI Museum who sent me his record. It says 'recommended by' Sub Inspector Smith (Riverstown) - so I assume that is where he started his career then, and possibly lived. For your information, John pensioned 01/11/1885 as a Sergeant and his number was 35824. Please could you kindly look in your Jim Herlihy book and see if there is anything else to add? Thanks for your help in pointing me in the right direction.

I can?t add any new information to what you know about  John?s career. He evidently lived in the Riverstown area and so I would search the relevant parishes in that area for his baptism etc.

It was RIC policy not to post a policeman to the County where he normally resided, so you can be fairly sure that he never served in Co Sligo. Cavan was probably his first posting.

Riverstown itself is in the parish of Kilshalvey. It?s parish records start in 1840. You can see the surrounding parishes on this link which also tells you when their records start and where copies are held.
