I am trying to find any information on my great x2 Grandmother Bridget McCabe who married John Hart at Knockbride Roman Catholic Chapel on 25th January 1877. Bridget was the daughter of John McCabe, a farmer. John was from County Sligo and was in the RIC, and was the son of John Hart, a farmer. I know from the 1901 census records that Bridget McCabe was born County Cavan and the marriage certificate show both her and John as living in Cavan at the time of marriage in 1877. I would ideally like to find out if Bridget McCabe was indeed also born & baptised in Knockbride, plus any details of her parents. Many thanks.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church, so I would search Knockbride?s baptism records for Bridget?s. Their baptism records start in 1835 so you should be OK. You can see where copies are held using this link:

  • Hi Joe,

On the Marraige cert, does it give Knockbride as the townland they were both living in & was her father living or deceased at time of marraige.  Knockbride is a parish & there is also a townland by the same name.

The parish of Knockbride is divided into 2 areas East & West & has 2 Churches.

Out of curiosity which RIC barracks was John Hart attached to?

I browsed the 1901 Census for the townland of Knockbride in the District Electoral Division of Skeagh & while there are McCabes there, her father  John is not one of them, so if Knockbride is the townland, he would have died between their marraige (if alive then) & 1901.

I would use familysearch.org (free site) or any of the subscription sites to locate his date of death  & if you order that certificate, this would also give you the name of the informant & if it is his wife I would then search for hers after that & getting the informant on that one, would hopefuly give you a name of the family member surviving which will tie you back to most likely who ever has taken over the farm, with that information ie name & exact townland I can ask people who live in the area about this family.

Good luck in your search & if you are in Co. Cavan I will gladly show you around Knockbride.

  • Hi Carmel, thanks for your reply. I have enclosed a copy of the 1877 marriage certificate, please could you kindly have a look and let me know what you think? I can't make out the Registrar's District, in the Union of, nor the Residence at the Time of Marriage. Basically I can't read them and don't have the local knowledge like yourself! The entry does not show Bridget's father as desceased so I assume he was not, at this time. I have a copy of John Hart's RIC record from the Police Museum, it shows that he started his career at Riverston in Sligo on 16th July 1869. He transferred to Cavan on 3rd December 1869, Galway (West Riding) on 1st April 1877 and Meath on 1st December 1880. He pensioned from the service on 1st November 1895, as a sergeant. Thanks for your advice, I will now look into what you have suggested. Regards, Joe.
