My great grandfather, Thomas John McEntyre was born to John Thomas McEntyre and Mary Lynch on the 1 December 1832 in County Cavan. He eventually left Ireland to travel to Australia where he met and married Mary Brigid Curtin. They both finally settled in New Zealand. Thomas has  listed his birth place on a number of records in New Zealamd as Lavey, County Cavan. Atleast we think it is Lavey as the handwriting is not that clear and could be interpreted as Laoy.

I am looking for assistance in  locating any information about Thomas and his family e.g is his baptism recorded in parish records, are his parent's deaths recorded, are there McEmtyre people in the parish today? Any help would be most appreciated

kind regards, Maria McEntyre

  • Hi Maria,

    I hope you are well.

McEntyre, is commonly spelt McIntrye here, however, I will try & give you a selection of sites that you could look at.

    1. Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

    2. You can look up familysearch.org (free site)

    3. Cavan Genealogy, would also be able to help you they are at :

    1st floor,

    Johnston Central Library,
    Farnham Street,
    Cavan Town,
    County Cavan.
    Tel: +353 (0)49 4361094
    Fax: +353 (0)49 433149  email cavangenealogy@eircom.net

They also have a partial 1821 Census, which luckily includes the parish of Lavey, it is a large parish ( which is a religious and civil area) within that area, it is further divided into townlands and is they are listed would help you narrow down your search.

    4.  In case they are on on the convict transportation ships, but look at this list

     http://www.nationalarchives.ie/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Ireland-Australia-transportation.pdf

Do you have any names of brothers or sisters, as the combination would help identify the the family better, I did a search of the 1901 National Census, but did not identify similar names in Lavey.

I seen a family tree on Ancestry, most likely yours, when looking for the parents, I use roughly a dob for them as 30 years before he was born.  Do check out all the name variations.

Best of luck with your search & do let me know how you got on,  do look at all his evidence for other clues, you never know what is there that you may have missed.

  • Dear Carmel

thank you for your email. The ancestry.com family tree will be mine. There are McEntyres listed in Cavan - In the Shercock and Cootehill areas as well as Corporation lands and Annagh. My gut feeling is that Thomas came from the east of Cavan, near Ballieborough and Shercock. However, the place he lists on his NZ records. - Laoy or Lavey - had us stumped. We have had our dad's DNA test done and will order a report from Tyrone Bowes to see if he can assist us in locating the family place in Cavan.

while the name is usually spelt McIntyre, there are exact matches to the name McEntyre in Cavan.

    Thank you for your help

    kind regards

  • Hi Maria, Do you want to share the piece of paper that the place name is written on incase I make something else of it,do you have a copy of his baptism?

I would know the McIntyres between Bailieborough & Shercock & I would know someone who knows the McIntyres beside cootehill, so if you get a lead I cant get you contacts.  In my husbands family some of his distant relations were married into McIntyres, but I dont have their info, that far back.

  • Dear Carmel

Thank you for your reply and kind offer to follow up my query.I attach a copy of a birth certificate (NZ) for Thomas John McEntyre's daughter, Hanorah. On the certificate he registers his place of birth as Lavy or Laoy (hard to read), Cavan, Ireland. That piece of information has led to sign up to Lavey parish as a possibel connection for our original family place.

On Thomas' marriage certificate (Australian) he records his place of birth as Cavan Ireland and his parents as John McEntyre and Mary Lynch. I attach that record also to this reply. Thomas left Ireland and went to the gold fields of Victoria, Australia before settling in Arrowtown, Otago, NZ where he farmed    until he died in 1915.

We believe he had a brother in NZ for a time with him as an Owen McEntyre was listed on the NZ electoral role at the same address as Thomas. There is only a record of Owen for about 5 years in NZ. We do not know if he returned to Ireland or if he lived elsewhere in NZ.

I have research records of McEntyre / McIntyre in Cavan and note that there were two McEntyres in 1856 - 57 Griffith's Valuation  carried out in County Cavan. The first was Michael McEntyre leasing land from Mary Fitzpatrick in Back Lane in the Townland ,  Corporation Lands, in the parish of Annagh and Barony of Loughtee Lower. The second McEntyre listed was Patrick McEntyre leasing land from John Vernon in the Townland of Kilcorby in the parish of Drumlane and Barony of Loughtee  Lower.

There are three McIntyres recorded in the parish of Lavey in the Tithe aplotment books - Hugh, Owen and Peter - in 1823 -1837 which s round the time Thomas was born. However, none of those names are listed on any of Thomas's records.

The 1901 and 1911 census records McEntyres living in Shercock, Cootehill and Ballieborough areas.

If you need further information to assist you, just email me and i will see if I have it.

The dates we have for Thomas are: Born  1 December 1832 (Cavan Ireland). Married 31 January 1866 (Australia). Died 1915 Arrowtown NZ. An early settler record about Thomas says that he emigrated to Australia around 1855  -56. We can find any shipping record so cannot help out there. Thomas was catholic.

I really appreciate your kind offer to help. Our connection to Ireland is importnat to our family.

Both my parents families are trace to Ireland - Roscommon (Lee and Early), Antrim (Delargey and McLean), Galway (Forde and Higgins), Waterford (lynch), Limerick (Fitzgerald), Clare(Curtin and Bellet)  and Cavan(McEntyre and Lynch)! We have had more luck with the other counties and other family lines.

    Kindest regards
