Hello

I have traced my greta great grandparents back to the townland of Gallonabraher in the Lurgan Parish through the 1841 census. While my name is spelt McEntyre now, it would appear that it was spelt as mcintire in the1841 census. My great grand father is John Mcintire, born to Thomas and Anne Mcintire. My great great grandmother was Mary Lynch born to John and Ellen Lynch, also of the same townland and parish.

It was my great grandfather, Thomas John McEntyre (John Mcintire and Mary Lynch's son), born around 1832, that left Ireland for Australian gold fields before settling in NZ.

He gave his birth place as the parish of Lavey whcih is a few kilometers north of Gallonabraher.

I am wondering of anyone can help me find baptism, marriage and death records for the mcintire and lynch families in Gallonabraher and in Lurgan parish.

Are there people from those families still inthe parish today?

Regards

  • Maria:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We do not have parish liaisons in either Lavey or Lurgan parishes.

I tried searching the 1841 census for your family and got no record. Can you send me a link with the 1841 census record that you located?

Also, were your ancestors Roman Catholic or Church of Ireland?

  • Thank you for your prompt reply Roger.

I double checked my family tree and noticed that it was the 1821 census that has records for mt great great great grandfather Thomas McIntir

    Thomas Mcintir

    Ireland Census, 1821

    Place: Lurgan, Cavan, Ireland

    Townland: Gallonabraher County Cavan

    Parish: Lurgan

    Age: 46

    Occupation: Farmer

    Birth Date: 1775

Others listed as living with Thomas are:

    Anne Mcintir Wife 42
    Michl Mcintir Son U 5
John Mcintir  Son 20 (my great great grandfather(
    Thomas Mcintir Son 12
    Elizabeth Mcintir Daughter 19
    Anne Mcintir Daughter 18
    Mary Mcintir Daughter 15
    Ellen Mcintir Daughter  8

In the same townland the census records have the Lynch family listed. My great grandfather , John Mcintir, married Mary Lynch.

One of their chidren, Thomas John McEntyre, is my greatgrandfather who travelled to NZ with his brorher, Charles Owen McEntyre.

I believe that Thomas was born in Lavey parish - most likely in Leiter townland. I have found other McEntyre relatives in Lavey - Knockbride, Leither etc

  • Hi Roger

I also find Thomas again in the Tithe Applotment books - 1825 -  in the same townland land but this time it is spelt Gullanabraher. His surname is also spelt differently - this time it is McEntee.

  • Hi

    One more query Roger.

I find in the Tithe Applotment Books for Lavey that there are Tearneys listed - Thomas and Mary, Owen, James, Phelix. Would Tearney  (which I have also found spelt as Tierney) be an earlier spelling for McIntyre / McIntir / Micintire / McEntyre / McEntee etc?
