My second great grandmother Rose Farrelly married Anthony Sheridan on June 24,1833 in Lurgan ( Kilnagun ). The witnesses were Joseph Sheridan And Brgid Gargan.  I believe she was born in 1817. I am trying to find out who her Parents were. I think her father was Patrick Farrelly and really not sure of her mother. I plan on visiting the area in November.. It looks like the Sheridans and Farrellys were quite numerous in this area.. Thanks    Vinny Driscoll

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Although there are some records in the late 1700s, the Lurgan RC records start in November 1821 which would be too late for Rose. I did search Roots Ireland for Farrelly baptisms from 1821-1831 in Lurgan RC parish with a father named Patrick. Ten records came up. I listed the oldest three records which are below. The second record has a mother with a surname Gargan so I thought maybe there was a connection with the witness at Rose's wedding. Perhaps a cousin?

Lurgan is one of the parishes in Co. Cavan where 1821 census records exist and I saw quite a few Farrelly records. I think it would be worthwhile to search to see if you can find Patrick and Rose Farrelly http://census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing does show a number of Patrick Farrellys. If your Patrick was still alive in 1856, he may be listed.     http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cavan/lurgan.htm

  • Dear Vinny,  I was alerted to another query in 2013 from a Scott Stauter, he too is looking for a Farrelly, perhaps this may help you.  I have copied it below.  Contact has also been made with someone who lives near Kilnagun, Best wishes Carmel

    Hugh Philip Farrelly

I am looking for information on Hugh Philip Farrely, who was siad to have been born on 25 Jan 1818 in Lurgan, Cavan, Ireland. He immigrated to the US in 1838. I would like to find information on his parents and siblings.

    • Hi Scott

The closest matches for a birth/baptism of Hugh Farrelly 1818 Cavan on www.rootsireland.ie/ is 1813 and 1823. Both are from Lurgan so I'm not sure which record is the right one!

It costs to view records on rootsireland but if you purchased them it will show whether it's a transcription error or duplication.

    • Scott, Do you have any info on Hugh ? His death cert might give the name of his parents and the townland he was from. There were lots of Farrellys in Lurgan at the time so it's difficult to know which was his family. Have details on one 1 Farrelly family in the area but need more to see if your Hugh was a member. If he had children what were their names ? The traditional naming pattern would help if he used it.
