My great-grandmother, Catherine Heery, married Anthony Brady sometime around 1870.  They lived on afarm in Relaghbeg/Relaghmore, Co. Cavan.  They had children:  Thomas, Bridget, Rose, Mary, Catherine, Terence, Annie, Anthony, Elizabeth, and Agnes.

Agnes Diana Brady was my paternal grandmother who died in 1920 at age 26; hence we never learned tales of her family from ages past.

I have seen a Baptismal Certificate from rootsireland.ie for a Catherine Heery, dated 13 April 1852, from Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.  It lists her parents as John Heery and Biddy Berry.  I have no way of verifying that this is indeed "our" Catherine Heery.

Census of 1901 shows only Anthony Brady and 3 of his children.  So I'm assuming that Catherine died before 1901.

All of Catherine's children emigrated to USA except Anthony Jr.  He stayed with his father until his father died in April of 1911.  Anthony Jr. "lost" the farm soon after his father died.  Anthony Jr. then married Ellie Gaffney, also from Relaghbeg and they remained there.  I do not know when Anthony Jr. or Ellie Gaffney may have died.

I have no information of the Bradys before Anthony, Sr.  So basically, I've reached a dead-end with both sides of the family with this generation.  Any information would help in my search.  Thank you in advance for any clues you can provide.

I found a baptismal index record for the oldest son Thomas who was born in June 1869. Therefore, I think Anthony and Catherine were married 1868 or earlier. I was not able to locate a civil marriage index record for them. I did find what I believe is the death index record for Catherine in 1900. If you want to get a copy of the death record, you can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie  fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of death, registration district ( Bailieborough) and the volume and page number ( 2 and 237). Costs around 4 euros.

Relagh Beg townland is in Moybolgue civil parish. I found two Heery records in Moybolgue parish in the 1858 Griffiths Valuation for Co. Cavan. Thomas Heery lived in Relagh More townland and John Heery lived in Tullynaskeagh townland. I'm wondering if Thomas was the father of Catherine.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the speedy comments.  I will be ordering Catherine Brady's death certificate from the GRO tomorrow since I'm sure it must be her.  Thanks for that information.

Thomas Heery of Relaghmore may indeed be Catherine's father, but I'll be looking for other info to verify that, of course.  I've been searching everywhere for a marriage record for Catherine and Anthony but to no avail.  It's like they operated under the radar!   I have serious doubts about the rootsireland.ie 1852 Baptism certificate for Catherine at Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.

Anthony Brady's last will and testament was filed in 1911 at Relaghmore, Tierworker.  I'm understanding that the Parish of Tierworker is intertwined with the Cavan section of Moybologue (which straddles the Cavan/Meath county line).  Then of course there's the Baileyborough connection.  And some of the emigration ship manifests list the daughters' home as Kells.  I look forward to planning a trip to the area.  A 2nd cousin (another great-grandchild of Catherine and Anthony) lives in Ireland and I plan to be in touch with her.

I have the Ireland Birth Index Records for children Thomas (1869), Mary Anne (1871), Bridget (1872), Rose Anne (1876), and Catherine (1878).  I've visited all the gravesites of all the children in the USA (my father's mother, aunts and one uncle (Terrance), but not for Thomas.  Lost track of Thomas after 1920 when his name showed up in my grandmother's (Agnes) obituary.  I do have a prayer card for him, showing his date of death as 5 Jan 1933, but know nothing about where he lived and died.

Well, thanks for helping out today.  It's very nice of you.
