I'm looking for any information on Mary McGovern (born 1857) in Cavan county. She married John McDonald (born 1844) in Cavan in 1878. The certificate states they married at Kill, Cavan. Does anyone know if that is short for something? Where it might be?

  • Hi Judy,

There is a parish of Kilsherdany, which would be known locally at Kill, it would be close to the town of Cootehill, Co Cavan.

On the marriage cert, it would state where they resided last, this may or may not be their homes, though most like is.  If you cant make out the townland, please scan it to me & I will try and decipher it for your, hopefully the scan will work for you.

  • Kill (church), Kil, pronounced keel. Barony of Tullagarvey, East Breifny or Breifne. Also look northeast to Kildrumsherdan.  Kilmore Diocese Roman Catholic Parish of Drumgoon includes Cootehill RC records from 1829. Or 1821 Census substitute in National Archives, Dublin, Ireland. Also available are damaged Kilmore Will of 1682-1858 and Adman Bonds of 1728-1858.) RC Killeshandra Parish Records start 1835, Kilmore Diocease.

Our McGOVERN - MAGAURAN families are from Muff Townland, Kil, Cavan, as shown on maps to be across Parish border into Kildrumsheridan Parish. A dau. Mary b. 1858 never married and appears there in 1911 census.
