Adam and Thomas Henthorn emigrated to Canada in 1846 via Port of New York. Stayed briefly in Ellenberg and then settled in Canada.
Adam (1827) and Thomas (1824) were born in Cordegan (previsously called Cordingin) Larah parish, county Cavan. They had a sister Margaret who attended Thomas' wedding in Hemmingfor Quebec Canada in 1849. Thomas lived in Montreal Quebec Canada and died there in 1893. Adam moved about, settling in York (Toronto) Ontario Canada and died in 1890.
The 1821 Ireland census shows 7 Henthorn families in Cavan. We are missing the link as to which family Thomas and Adam were part of.

Hi Mike:
Thank you for your query. I have passed it onto a Cavan volunteer who may be able to assist you.
Please give them a week or two to reply.
Stay safe and well.

Hi Mike,
as you will no doubt know through your research, the records for this period in Ireland can be patchy. This means that the further back we go the more we have to cast our net widely and accumulate so that the bits of evidence confirm each other. This is all the more important given the Irish naming tradition where it is quite possible to find successive generations in the same area with the same names [link to IrelandXO briefing].
To try and distinguish the different Henthorne families and establish potential ancestors, it would be good to have at hand:
- Siblings Adam, Thomas & Margaret - any details you may have on birth/baptism e.g. exact dates, parishes, parents, address, witnesses etc
- Names/other information on their parents - these may appear on baptism, migration, marriage and Canada Census records
- The names of Adam & Thomas’ boy children and Margaret’s girl children - this will help in trying to establish connections with other families through naming patterns
- Any occupations identified - these were often passed on through generations or shared in families
- Their religion
Meanwhile, I did take a quick look at the 1833 Tithe Applotment records for Cordegan and found this http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?county=Cavan&parish=Larah&townland=Cordegin&search=Search
Henthorn, Thos, Cordegan, Sarah 1833
Henthorn, George, Cordegan 1833
In itself this doesn’t prove anything, but the population of Larah was small, and knowing their religion could help:
http://sites.rootsweb.com/~irlcav/drung.htm
1814 The protestant census reports 155 males, and 134 females in Drung. 68 males and 54 females in Larah. Total 411. The Parish register of Drung and Larah, Diocese of Kilmore, Drung Register of Bap. Aug.1785 to July 5, 1827. Mormans Film 0897355

Attached FilesHenthorns in Cavan 1821 Census.pdf (191.35 KB)
I have uploaded a listing of the Henthorn's in Cavan in the 1821 census. Family lore is fairly certain that we are related to the Cordegan (Cordingin) families.
Religion was Church of Ireland.
Thomas born 1824 and Adam 1827. We have no birth information on Margaret, the sister who attended the wedding in Canada. There are likely other siblings but we do not know any details.
descendants of Adam have told me that he was referred to as Adam II and his son as Adam III. This would infer that his father was called Adam but I have not found any Adam Henthorn in Ireland of an age to have fathered sons in 1824 and 1827. Also I have a picture of Adam II's mother who came to Canada and was referred to as Hannah. Again no records to confirm this.
I reviewed the original parish registers for Larah at Church House in Dublin. Was not able to directly link to either Thomas or Adam.
Both Thomas and Adam could read and write. Their occupations in Canada were listed as Laborer.
hope this helps

Hi Mike,
The Census extract you uploaded is a wonderful piece of information especially given the scarcity of information on births, marriages and deaths for this period. Because information is so scarce I think sometimes there is not much left for us but to go through the laborious task of working with what we have i.e. the seven families to see who can be included and excluded from enquiries.
I will set out how I think you could tackle this - forgive me if I repeat what you already know or have done.
Given the small population of the area and the repeated names of the male children it is almost certain that these families were related. It could also be that elder children from these families may have moved on and are therefore not included.
- As you have family information about the Cordingin connection, you could start to try and reconstitute the families of John and George - perhaps starting with the male children who would have been of marrying age in 1824 when your ancestors Thomas and Adam were born.
- It can be quite hard to keep a track of different families - sites such as ancestry have the facility for making more than one tree which is free. Although it may seem tedious you can include as much information as you come across - addresses, occupations, marriage or baptismal witnesses - these may be crucial to you making links and the information will be where you need it rather than in lots of notes. (By doing this I have found relationships and merged 5 trees so far).
- Sources - have you seen John Grenham on possible sources for your area? https://www.johngrenham.com/c_parish/c_parish_main.php?civilparishid=539&civilparish=Larah&county=Cavan
Roots Ireland has some records for Henthorn https://www.rootsireland.ie/cavan-genealogy/
A trawl through the civil death records for the area could help you fill in the families
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
There are quite a number of discussions of Henthorne on Rootschat which you may find helpful
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=search2
I tracked children of a Magrath born 1802 and found an 1890 newspaper obituary for his daughter which confirmed her father was my gg-gpa’s brother and also details of his father (and therefore my ggg-gpa). I had absolutely no evidence about the said Magrath’s link to my family other than the very similar first names of his children to those of my gg-gpa’s.
I hope you find this useful,
Irene

I have found an Adam Henthorn born 1829 whose father was Adam and mother was Mary. They also had a daughter Margaret born in 1832. They were born in Ballymachurgh. This is approx 20km from Cordegan. No mention of a brother Thomas (my ancestor) but I do know that Thomas and Adam emigrated to Canada via New York USA in 1846. Also Margaret Henthorn was witness to Thomas' wedding in 1849 in Hemmingford Quebec Canada. Descendants of Adam who emigrated advise he was called Adam II, implying his father was Adam. I am searching for details of the Henthorn family in Ballymachurgh as this may be the Henthorn branch I am descended from. I see there is a Church of Ireland in Ballymachurg which is now inactive but appears to have a significant cemetary attached.
I will be touching base with Church House in Dublin to see if they have parish registers from Ballymachurgh.
