Dear Listers,

My friend Kathleen Lynch was born in June 1953 in Hitchen Hospital, Hertfordshire.  Her mother was also called Kathleen Lynch and she worked as a cook in Baldock, Hertfordshire.  My friend was adopted in January 1955 and subsequently moved to the Geneva Switzerland area with her adoption parents.  My friend has done DNA testing and she has several matches with links to various Lynch family members from Cavan, including one for Patrick Lynch born in 1857 in Meath and his daughter Rose A. Lynch born in Cavan in 1902 and married to Mathias Caldwell.

We would welcome any suggestions on how to trace the birthdate/birthplace of her mother Kathleen Lynch and eventally her unknown father.

Happy Easter and stay safe in these challenging times!

  • Hi Howard, My first question on looking at this is whether your friend has her birth certificate?  This potentially has key information that could help the search.  I can see an Apr-Jun 1953 registration for a Kathleen Lynch, Hitchin vol4b, p247.  In fact ANY information on Kathleen (Mother) would help - age, occupation etc.  If we can't follow the line back to Patrick Lynch of Meath, then the alternative is to explore the descendents of Patrick's male children.  I had a quick look at the ancestry web site, but did not find any trees with that information.  Best regards, Irene

  • Dear Irene,

Thanks for your interest and reply to our post on Kathleen Lynch.  Your birth certificate search is correct for Kathleen born in Hitchin Hospital in june 1953. (attached) It does not give the mother's age or origins unfortunately (family history suggested that she was Irish - see DNA results below).  We are in the process of applying for access to the the case notes for her adoption in 1955 in St Albans Herts.

The two close family and 10 extended family DNA matches on My Heritage are attached, with several Irish individuals and several with links to the Lynch family.  We are awaiting her DNA results from Ancestry.com.

Thanks for any suggestions or information on these results.

looking forward to a fruitful collaboration!

    best regards,

    Howard and Kathleen

  • Hi Howard/Kathleen, Thank you for the information attached. I had another look for Patrick Lynch b1857/61 info.  He appears in the 1901 and 1911 Census at Cloughbally, Virginia, Co. Cavan.  As you may already know there were at least 4 male children - Francis B b 1898, Thomas b1898 (twins or an age mistake?), James b1900 and Patrick F b 1901.  There were a lot of similarly named Lynchs nearby at this time.  I didn't find anyone else with more than their births in their tree.  The quickest link is likely to be your DNA testing and contact with the close relatives.  Or the archives of the National Service Hostel where Kathleeen's mum worked. If not, then Patrick's family shouldn't be too difficult to reconstitute as there will be records that can be traced .... over time ;-).  Hope the DNA results settle a few things for you quickly, Best regards, Irene

  • PS I did find a 21.11.1933 marriage for a James Lynch (father Pattrick)  and a Brigid Gaffney - this last being the same as someone in the close relatives category.  It may just be coincidence, but it's probably worth keeping on file... Irene
