When Margaret Bradburn was about 20 years old she was transported to Tasmania after she was found guilty of petty theft [coat, petticoat and shawl] in 1852.  It was her second offence [stole a cloak] and the court took a dim view of her behaviour.  She was sent to the Grangegorman Female Prison [in records dated 3 April 1862]. From Grangegorman she was assigned to the Midlothian departing Dublin 17 November 1852 and arriving in Van Diemans Land [Tasmania\  on 24 February 1853.  She was first sent to the Cascade Female Factory and soon after [9 March] allocated to Horace Rowcroft.  By August she was back in Cascade Femal Factory having been absent wothout leave.  Sentenced to 6 months hard labour. In JUly 1854 she again allocated to Horace Rowcroft in New Town.  She was granted permission to marry in 1856 - married Henry John Boulter [also a convict] in New Norfolk, Tasmania.  They had 9 children and Margaret had one child from a previous relationship with William Cripps.  .

Her daughter Edith Lily Boulter [1868-1933] married James Arthur Clark in 1896 in New Norfolk.  He was afree settler from England.  They had four children, the youngest of whom, Roy Alfred Clark was my father in law.

I am interested in any information at all about this family and the town they lived in Drung and am happy to share the information I have now.  Thank you in advance

  • Hi Wodalla,

Drung is a parish and a townland, there is no town, but at a crossroad there is a school, church and a pub.  The parish is situated along the Cootehill to Cavan Road.  You need to find your townland, which is a collection of parcels of land owned by different people.  In order to find your townland, I have looked at the records on RootsIreland (Subscription site)  for other children born to Thomas & Mary Bradburn, I have most likely found her brother Thomas Bradburn due mainly to the proximity of the birth dates
              Date of Baptism:    18-Sep-1829
Address:    Corovay    Parish/District:    DRUNG & LARAH
    Gender:    Male    County    Co. Cavan
    Denomination:    Church Of Ireland
Father:    Thomas Bradburn    Mother:    Mary Bradburn
    Occupation:    Farmer

Edward and Mary were also born to this family.  There are 2 other families close by born to Edward & Richard Bradburn, their children are born 20 and 30 years before Margaret.  This family are most likely connected due to their location and repetition of the name Edward.

Using https://www.townlands.ie it looks like this is the townland of Corravohy.  Did she call any of her children Edward/Thomas/Richard?

I searched the Tithe Applotments dated around 1832 and in the townland of Corovoy we can find Thomas & Edward living there, they were farmers.

I came across this blog have you been in contact with this family? https://jillettfamilyancestors.blogspot.com/2018/09/m12-margaret-bradbu…  and this site https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Livingston-2453, it would indicate that Bradburns had emigrated to Australia in 1845, if they were related to Margaret was she trying to get out to them

Also look at previous posts on this site and see can you make any connections with them https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/message-board/bradburn-family-drung

I have searched irishgenealogy.ie for deaths for her parents but they may have died before civil registration 1864, I wonder had they died before she was transported, was this the reason she was in very poor circumstances, some images are not available yet but you can purchase them meanwhile.  I also looked for wills etc but could not find anything on https://genealogy.nationalarchives.ie    I also searched for headstones without success, but if there is one, they are all not transcribed.

Look at all incidences of the surname on these records, they are not too plentiful, you might be able to plot up the other family trees and make connections.  I have found that by widening my online family tree, even without connecting them I have made connections.
