Searching for the Irish origins of Michael Conaty (also, Connaughty), born around 1812 in County Cavan. Possible parents are Charles Conaty and Catherine Donoughy.
Michael was in Quebec, Canada by 1831 where he married Mary O'Brien (of County Wexford) in Quebec City on 11 April 1831. They raised several children in the Frampton area of Dorchester County in Quebec before the entire family relocated to Olmsted County, Minnesota, USA, around 1867.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find a place of origin without more information. There are a couple of places where you can search online, however it may be difficult to discern whether the results are relevant to your family or not without more information:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
You could also try searching in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century for some record of his family. These offer no genealogical information but can sometimes give a parish name that can act as a starting point for your research. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Have you tried looking into Michael?s emigration? Sometimes more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. For information on Canadian immigration records check the National Library and Archives at http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

The Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/index.htm
Irish Genealogy Tool-kit: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/index.html
You could also try contacting Cavan Genealogy Centre for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: cavangenealogy@eircom.net
Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
