Hiya, I'm looking for some information on my relatives John Rodgers b circa 1845 (co Cavan) and his wife Ann Hughes b circa 1849 (co Louth).  John's father was also called John and his mother was Ann Kairnan.  I'm not sure if the Ann's have 'e's or not.

John and Ann Hughes were married in Coatbridge, Scotland in 1867 and lived the rest of their days there.

If anyone has any information on these people, I'd really love to hear from you.

Thanks

  • Hi Helen,

Have you any idea where in Co Cavan, John Rogers was born or what his parents worked at, were they farmers?

30 Rodgers turned up in 1901 census, his parents would most likely be dead by then so you would be concentrating on a brother in order to find their place of origin.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

The name turns up 82 times in Co Louth

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

& more turn up when I search the name variation Rogers.

Dont worry about 'e' that is the least of your problem at this stage.

When you looked at the Scottish Census, were there any similar names living nearby or with them, they could be family & if they have dissappeared of the next census, perhaps they have returned & we could look for them here..

If you wish to contact Cavan Genealogy, they could search the baptism records for you.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm Or you might try Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) which will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the familymay have owned (as it usually passed on to a relation). But you need to find the townland.

  • Hi. My name is Claire Simpson and I live in Australia. My Parents Annie and James Dunne migrated to Australia in 1950. I am doing the family tree and noticed you were researching the Rogers.

I know very little about my great grandparents and my grandfather James Dunne married a Mary Rogers. They lived in Bailieborough Co Cavan . Perhaps we are related? If so I would love to make contact and exchange information with you.

    My email is     mrsidonttalkmuch@hotmail.com

Hoping to hear from you soon

  • From the Scottish marriage certificate you should get the name of Ann's father and possibly her mother..When Ann died the death certificate may also have given these details. Do you know any of her brothers or sisters? In what part of Louth did they live?

If you let me have these details I will look up my records for County Louth. I have over 400 Hughes family pedigrees for County Louth and over 30 000 names in my database..

I note you apparently have not replied to the posting by Cavan Genealogy on 31 August 2013 regarding your enquiry. I have become increasingly frustrated over the years by people posting messages and failing to respond to replies. Thus I now rarely reply to postings for information because the majority of people do not have the decency to reply. If you genuinely want me to help please respond promptly to my enquiry.

  • Hiya Michael, thanks for your response.  Ann's parents were Patrick Hughes and Ann Sullivan and if it helps Patrick was noted as a Blacksmith and a Furnace Keeper on the two certificates you mentioned.  I haven't found any census data on them yet but I would assume going by tradition that they would have a son called Patrick.  Unfortunately that's all I know.  Ann was born about 1848/1850 and married in Scotland in 1867 to John Rodgers.

  • Hello Helen

I have run your Rodgers/Hughes names through my pedigree database and can find no trace of this family or their parents.  Whilst this is disappointing news I do have something of interest. I have done some reseach in Scotland and traced John and Ann Rodgers and their 5 children  to Old Monkland in Lanarkshire. I believe that Old Monkland is close to Coatbridge where you said they lived. If you let me have your email address I will send you the pedigree sheet for this family.

  • Carmel, thanks very much for your response and my apologies for the delay in responding.  The only information I have on the Rodgers family is that John (who married Ann Hughes in Scotland in 1867) came from Co Cavan, was born around 1845/1850 and that he was a coalminer.  I have his parents noted as John Rodgers and Ann Kairnan on his marriage certificate but Philip Rodgers and Ann Geogh on his death certificate.  On the marriage certificate it states that his dad (John) was a shoemaker (if I'm reading it right), however it does not say where they came from in Co Cavan.  On the death certificate it states that his dad (Philip) was a farmer but again does not say where they came from in Co Cavan.  I do think the death parents have been recorded wrong and that Philip should really be a John as there has never been any other Philip in the family, and as to the mothers maiden name I don't know which one is right, however all the other death information seems to be correct.  I have asked my relatives in Scotland however they believe they originated from Tory Island and the family came from Co Mayo or Donegal but I can't find any documentation to support this theory so am sticking with my Co Cavan line of enquiry.  I'll keep doing some research on the Scotland side of the family and try and fill in any gaps and relook.

  • Hi All.

My great great gandfather Patrick Duffy b ABT 1847 was from Leiter in Bailieborough and married an Ann Rogers who was born ABT 1843. They were married at St Annes RC church in Bailieborough on 14 October 1871. have no idea if they are any relatives but would love to track down my Duffy Rogers connection. I believe they had 3 children Terence Thomas, Annie, and Patrick.

    Cheers

  • Maree,

if the family were born after 1864, you should be able to get the birth certs for the children & if you have the marriage cert, you should also have the details of their parents and who the witnesses were, though they may/may not be related, but you will have a bit more to go on...did both of them live in Leiter?  Look at that cert again.   Details about where to get certs etc are on this page https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/GRO_Research.aspx

I think there is a cheaper option to buy on line, so I would contact them first as you only want a copy not an original Standard Cert.  I usually get mine in Dublin at the research centre.

    Regards Carmel
