Thomas Brady born approx. 1780 in County Cavan, Ireland to Andrew Brady and Nelly Lawler (not sure of exact spelling).  Thomas married Mary Anne Gartland in County Cavan and they had 5 living children.  Two boys and three girls.  Patrick (1811?), Thomas (1813?), Catherine, and two girls I am not sure of their names maybe Anne - Mary Anne or Elizabeth.  Mary Anne Gartland died around 1825 and Thomas packed up the children and came to Canada.  He settled in Alfred, Prescott County, Ontario, Canada.   Thomas's brother John born around 1797 arrived in Canada a few years before Thomas.  I am looking to find any information on Thomas's children their full names and dates of birth.   Any information on Thomas's parents and siblings as well as Mary Anne Gartland's parents and siblings.   Any help with the above would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Susan,

I am Carmel O'callaghan, an Administrator for Bailieborough & Shercock civil parishes, I have just joined this site & trying to get it up & running.  You have a lot of information, however do you have a townland or parish?  pre 1864 it is difficult to get information in Ireland.

I had a quick look at Familysearch.org, it is a free site & there is a Thomas Brady born in ireland in 1814 & he died in 1892 in Prescott, so this looks like your man.    Perhaps it would be a good idea to apply for a copy of his death cert, it should indicate if he married & there may be a family member that is an informant if not his wife, with that information you could then narrow your searches in Familysearch.org & trace his line that way.

Griffiths Valuation on ask about Ireland would have names & townlands, you could look for the surnames there.  Brady's are plentiful Gartlans not as many.

I hope this is of help to you.

    Best Wishes Carmel O'Callaghan

  • Hi Carmel,

The Thomas you mention in your comment is Thomas Brady's  (born 1780 approx) son born in County Cavan, Ireland around 1814 to Thomas Brady and Mary Anne Gartland.

The only information I have of their roots in Ireland is what I got off Thomas Brady's (born 1780) brother John Brady (born about 1798) who also came to Canada around 1825.   When John filled out his marriage registration he said he was born in  County Cavan, Ireland and indicated that his parents were Andrew Brady and Nelly Lawler.

Since Thomas Brady (1780) married Mary Anne Gartland and her last name is less common I will try that route.

Once Thomas arrived in Canada I was able to search documents and visit where he settled in Prescott County so I have a lot of info on his family history here but I am missing any family history of their time in Ireland and their Irish roots.  I lucked out that John when he married in Canada  provided me with their parents name and the county in Ireland where they originated from.  Hopefully the Gartland name will be easier to research and I can get some Irish history from that side.

If you come across any information you think will be useful in my research I would be greatful if you could pass it on to me.

Thank you for responding to my request and your help.   Take care and good luck in getting your site up and running.

    Suse.

  • Hi Nick Patrick Brady,

That would be great.  Any help you can give me will be very much appreciated.   Do you know the names of all Thomas's (born about 1780 in County Cavan, Ireland) children.  I know he had two boys and three girls from his marriage to Mary Anne Gartland. He then left Ireland after Mary Anne died and settled in Prescott County, Ontario, Canada along with his younger brother John.

I have been able to get some information on his second son Thomas (born about 1813 in County Cavan, Ireland)  but not his oldest son Patrick or the girls except for the name Catherine as one of his daughters name.   I would really appreciate any information you might have on Patrick and his siblings.  Thanks for getting touch.   Awaiting your reply.

    Suse.
