Hoping to find any descendants of tree from around Corrahy and wider, of the names Middleton, Ryder, Eakins, Cum(m)ing(s), Blumer/Bloomer, McLaughlin, Mahood, Harpur etc. The Eakins family I have no information from after 1830s.

Does anyone know what schooling facilities would have been around in the 1860/1870/1880 etc. My great grandparents seem to have been educated and could read and write. I would like to know what schooling my grandfather born 1878 in Corraghy would have received.

Looking forward to watching this site build.

  • Hi Patricia,

You have a lot of names, but what I would like to know is which grandfather was born in 1878 in Corraghy & is he the man who emigrated to New Zealand, some of the names you give would be common to certain areas, do you know what the main religion was? as I know some volunteers would have access to specific records & I hope we can help you.

  • Good evening,

19th Century - Yes my Grandfather John James Wilson Hogg MIDDLETON born 10 10 1878 left Cavan Co for Australia first, then NZ about 1902. He is in the 1901 Census in Belfast (which fits a family story) and I have seen the birth registrations for his siblings Eliza, Margaret, Martha, Mary Ann, William,Thomas, Robert (also bn 10 10 1878) Henrietta & twin Sarah and last Samuel bn 1883. The first child Anne Jane born c1862 I discovered accidentally but after going to Sydney, Australia, she returned to Ireland by 1900 and married, first a Cumming and 1925 a McLaughlin. Anne Jane helped her sister Margaret to get to Australia and may also have helped two first cousins, Robert MAHOOD and George MAHOOD both of whom died out there before the turn of the century. George died leaving his wife Wilhelmina with a son only 6 weeks.

The ship manifest with Margaret MIDDLETON on seemed to be full of Irish and a lot from Cavan.

The MIDDLETON's all seem to have been Presbyterian, and the marriage record for Grandad's father Robert James MIDDLETON to Margaret RYDER says they were married in the 2nd Presbyterian House in Shercock.

Robert James MIDDLETON's sister Anne Jane who married Robert MAHOOD was also married Presbyterian.

It is further back than Grandad's family I would like too. His father Robert James Middleton married Margaret Ryder and her father was James Ryder, but who was her Mother.

Gt Grandfather ROBERT JAMES MIDDLETON'S father was WILLIAM and he was married to Nancy EAKINS??? I have no proof of her name, only a partial tree from a descendant of her daughter, MARTHA HUSTON nee MIDDLETON who emigrated to Canada with her husband . William does not name his wife once in the letters he wrote to his sister MARTHA HUSTON in Canada.

18th Century - Gt St Grandfather William MIDDLETON in his letters to Martha name several of his siblings; Martha md John HUSTON (went to Canada) Agnes md Wm BRADLEY, John James md ?, Robert md Mary Anne CUMMINGS, Mary md Hugh BLOOMER. This generation were born around c1780's.

There is a good possibilty at least one of the BRADLEY'S daughters went to America and both Mary & Hugh BLOOMER were dead by 1825 leaving their daughter JANE with Gt Gt Grand father WILLIAM and his family.

I have many bits of information and I knew my Grandfather well but not long enough to become interested in family history unfortunately. His sister Henrietta came to NZ and brother Samuel went to USA about 1908.

I have seen their homes in Cavan Co but I didn't ask the right questions then either.

Do you know what is available at the local library/ies or a family history/genealogy centre? Is there any records/information about/from the 2nd Presbyterian House?

I also haven't found a deaths for gt grandparents Robert James or Margaret nor gt gt grandparents, William and ?Nancy. Does Baillieborough registration office/repositry still hold their trecords. Baillieborough seems to be the place most of the Middleton's names are registered.

If there is anyone who wants information about Irish who have come to NZ I would be very happy to help. Even those who went to Australia.

I am also happy to give a copy of the information I have found to any local familyhistory/genealogy group there if they would be interested. (When I have put it together in a readable format)

    Regards, Patricia

  • Hi Patricia,

You have a lot of information, I dont know if we can go back much further for you but I will check with another volunteer.  I have a photos of headstones for most of the names in Glassleck Presbyterian Graveyard & I can send them to you if you dont have them &  I would find it more convenient to send them to your personal email address, as this site stalls on me with photos.  Are you in contact with living relatives here? If not I can look & see who is still here.

  • Good afternoon Carmel,

Photos from the headstones would be wonderful.

Yes family members are still living and now own the two leased properties of William and Robert MIDDLETON. They are just not the members who have any information about the ancestors. Not being able to live our roots seems to make us more hungry for information about where we came from. The only cousin who was compiling the MIDDLETON family tree has now passed and her only offspring has left Ireland.

How do I advise you of my email for photos without putting it here on the site for anyone to contact.

    I will narrow down four questions whichever one/s you may be able to answer;

    1. What schooling would have been available to Corraghy in the 19th century especially from 1800 to 1880.

    2. How old is the Glassleck cemetery?

    3. Where/how do I find records of the 2nd Presbyterian House which is where my gt grandparents Robert James MIDDLETON and Margaret RYDER married.

    4. Baillieborough seemed to be where most registrations for the Shercock area were held. Are there still any archives held there?

    Many thanks, Patricia

  • Hi Patricia, my email address is ocallaghan.carmel@gmail.com, you can email me there.  I have another person checking records, who reads the messages on this site also & he will see what info he can obtain for you.  He did however advise the following:

As far as I know Presbyterians in the Shercock area first met in or around Shercock
and in 1836 they appointed Rev. Randall McCollum as their minister and built the church
at Glasleck shortly after that. The church at Glasleck was referred to as Shercock church
in the early days, I have church reports as recent as 1921 and it's still known as Shercock
Presbyterian Church. Back in the 1800' they spelled it 'Shircock'.

I have the church records: baptismal commences 1836 and marriage 1845. I will have a
look at that query which I hadn't read. I have already communicated with folks looking
up McLaughlin's and Middleton's in recent years.

End of his message, he will look & see who he communicated before.

I can send you the photos I have.  Regards Carmel

  • Hi Patricia,

I dont think I got an email for you, but what I did was set up a Gallery for Glasleck church, so you can see all the photos there, some are duplicated & hopefully will show all the information.

  • Good afternoon Carmel,

My apologies, somehow I never noticed you have replied to me.

    My email address is:

    broomsticktours@xtra.co.nz

I am not finding this website easy to navigate so where am I likely to find the Glasleck photos? Is it a seperate website or is it in Ireland Reaching Out somewhere?

  • Hi Patricia, I have all the photos under Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, sorry about the navigation, I agree & putting up photos is a nightmare, not too sure if you can find them, but tab back through & I have them named so you just need to look at the photos you want, at least that is what I intended.
