Jones and Wallace of Carrickcreeny

Hi There, my daughter is marrying a man from Carrickacreeney, so leave it with me & I will do some research. Have you looked at the photos that I have up from Graveyards in Glasleck & Shercock.  I know there are still Wallaces in the area & I will check out about Jones.

That is interesting that there are still Wallace in the area. It would be interesting to know the origins of this Wallace family and if they are (or not) the same Wallaces who came over from Ayrshire in Scotland around the early 1600s.

I can see John Wallace and Benjamin Wallace in the Griffiths Valuation (1857) at Carrickcreeny, but there are no Carrickcreeny Wallace's in the Tithe Applotment Books. However I do see a William Wallace at Corklan?? in Shercock in 1825. I'm not sure if he is a relation or not?

1911 Census - house 2 in Carrickcreeny (Shercock, Cavan) HOH = Widow Margaret Jones Wallace

Daughter Sarah (13 in 1901 and 23 in 1911) is my great grandmother who married William John Bailie in 1918. I look forward to hopefully learning more about these Jones and Wallace families.

Carmel I have finally found your gallery! I was looking at Image Galleries from Shercock (Cavan) where I got the message "This parish has not yet created any galleries. Call back soon to this page when they have been created."

However I now see your album called "Co Cavan, Shercock, Church of Ireland Graveyard" under Image Galleries from Bailieborough (Cavan)! I would hazard a guess that 6th image entitled "B j possible jones" is "Bn Jones" which could mean Benjamin Jones, of which there were a few over the years.

This is a very small stone, well worn, give me a few weeks & I will try & get a better reading, using tin foil etc.  There are 2 Wallace families, I think they did all originate in Carrickacreeny & there is still a Bailie family there & I have 2 phone numbers, which I will ring tomorrow (one for each name in the townland).  I look after the Bailieborough & Shercock site, but to save me confusion, I post all under Bailieborough.  I started college this week as a very mature student, so not as attentive as I would like to be.

I can save you the task of calling one of those numbers, I suspect the Bailie number is my great uncle at (042) ****535 and I believe I have gotten as much out from them as I can.

I have not got very far for you.  I did ring Michael Wallace, whose father was Johnny Wallace & I believe a brother of Sarah.  He could not help me but did refer me to your great uncle who is in his 80's & he has no further information than what you have & he knew, when I mentioned your name, which is good as I am worried incase people think I am a scam when I ring.  There are other Wallaces in Carrickacreeney, but Gt Uncle believes that they are not connected, as regards any information going back further, he was unable to help me nor with the headstone, which I will visit again for you.  

He did say that he lives in the original Wallace holding, which is good as through the Valuations office http://www.valoff.ie/research.htm you should be able to track the ownership of the property.  I think you should contact them & tell them who the current owner is & the previous owner would be William John & you know the property is in Carrickacreeney.  

To go back further you would need to contact the Registry of Deeds http://www.landirect.ie/eng/About_Us/Registry_of_Deeds_Services/Registr…

They will tell you about the previous owners & if they are Wallaces, you will have more names to work on.  In my own family memorials sometimes mention other family members & marriage settlements etc. 

You could also read the transcripts from old Cavan papers http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Cavan/index.html

This would give you some insight into their lives, though it usually gives news for the very wealthy & the very poor, the ordinary classes are not covered and if your family did more than farm, they may be mentioned.  You may have already written to the Church of Ireland in Shercock, if not enquire about any records relating to your family.

Will you write to your Great Uncle also as he was unsure if you got the information from them, I think they would like to hear again from you.
