I am looking for any information on a James Mooney born in Cavan circa 1800 (no birth certificate found yet). His father might be a Thomas Mooney, but that has not been confirmed. I"m guessing this because his first born son was named Thomas. His marriage license on 20 June 1831 in Glasgow, Scotland to Mary Mitchell states that he came from the Catholic parish of Kilann, civil parish of Baileieborough (which later became Shercock), County Cavan. If you know of anyone who may have information, please send them my way.

James Mooney circa 1800
The Catholic parish of Killann, has 3 churches, one in Bailieborough, Killann and Shercock. Shercock and Bailieborough are towns, Shercock the smallest. Killann is a rural area.
1800 is difficult to deal with, as it is pre civil registration. However the church records are now online at http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0817 you can search for free on this site, but you require patience and good eyesight. Roots Ireland has most of these transcribed, an odd one is missing as they were difficult to make out, the records for Killann cover the years 1835 to 1920 for births and marriages, so you are hoping to find the marriages of his siblings. This is a subscription site and you can register at http://www.rootsireland.ie
Another source I use is the Will Calendars alas the early wills are not usually available, but free to search but to you need to contact the National Archives to find out if the will is available. However, I did find this:
Deceased Surname Mooney
Deceased Forename Edward
Primary Beneficiary/Executor Eliza Mooney
Date of Death 4 Sep 1896
County of Death Cavan
Eliza is the widow of Edward and they lived in Shercock, the death certificate would be available and you can order a copy of it, the main reason for ordering to would be to find the townland that they lived in. There are details here on how to order the copy. http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/image-files/civil-reg-21-july-copyright-igt-600x866.jpg
I then looked up the 1901 census and there was as Elizabeth Mooney (nee Millar, as her brother was living with her) she was born in Dublin. I can’t find her in the 1911 census, so either she had died in the meantime or moved.
On familysearch.org (a free site) I did find 3 children born to them: John Joseph born 6/2/1871, Eliza 27/10/1866, Mary Ann 10/8/1865 I have found some of those names in Taghart, Shercock in the 1911 Census. The aim here would be to find the marriage date & cert for Edward and Eliza, they most likely married in Dublin the place where she was born. This cert would hopefully give the names of his parents. And hopefully they match yours.
Even if these are not your James’s siblings,I hope this has given you some idea of how to go about searching for your family. Please let me know if this is any help to you and if I can help you further. Regards Carmel O’Callaghan,
Bailieborough Cavan

Carmel,
Two things: First, my apology for this late reply. I either deleted the notification of your work or it never arrived. Either way, this thank you is way too late in coming. I greatly appreciate the insights.
Second, I believe the family to have originated in the Townland of Shinan. Judging by your description of Kilann, that is most likely the parish they were from.
Maybe this second piece of insight will make searching easier.
Finally, in 2015 I downloaded the Cavan phone book and mailed every Mooney in the county an introductory letter and my family tree from the 1800's. I had no luck in finding a relative through my "cold calling."
I'm still searching!
