I have my grandfather' (William Callahan)'s Australian birth certificate which states his father-Philip Callaghan , as being born in the Parish of Templeport , County Cavan.  Philip was the informant on his son's birth cert.  My great grandfather was born approx. 1820/21 according to various birth records of his children.

Philip's parents were John Philip Callaghan and Bridget Frances Moore.

I have searched many places looking for some record of  Philip, John or Bridget - all to no avail.

Wanting to know if perhaps any one would have these names in their families?  Philip also had the following siblings - James, William, Susan, Ann, Patrick and Frances. All of the known children of John and Bridget migrated to Australia from 1841 to approx 1849.  There may have been other children left in Ireland - not sure.

Here's hoping a miracle might occur, and I find out something :)

best wishes,

Maree Lamanna(Callahan)

  • Hi Maree,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information on the family makes a connection with you to share information.

Unfortunately, it may be hard to find information as civil registration did not begin in Ireland until 1864. Prior to this records were kept by the local parish church and Catholic records in Templeport parish do not start until 1836:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cavan&parish=Templeport&churchid=852

Church of Ireland records generally tend to have an earlier start date so if they Protestant you may have a better chance of finding records. Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

  • Maree,

It has been a few months since you posted, I hope you are still an active researcher. I am also looking for an ancestor by the maiden name of either Callahan or Kelleher. Most family records have her as Kelleher, but I have some that have her name as Callahan.  Her first name is Brigid and she married James Morrow (b.1796). My family records show she died in 1840 and is buried at Killiewaum.  James and children emigrated to Brantford Ontario.  I know this is a shot in the dark, but I figured it was worth trying.

    Warmest Regards and good hunting!

    James Morrow

  • Hi Maree, my husband’s great-great grandmother was Mary Callaghan from County Cavan. On her death certificate in 1900 (Victoria, Australia) it states that she married Patrick Keegan in Templeport, County Cavan in 1854. Her parents were James Callaghan and Margaret Bannon. Have you done an ancestry DNA test? My mother-in-law has so you should match up with her  if you share the same family of Callaghans. Kind regards, Therese

  • Thank you Therese.   I haven't done an Ancestry DNA test yet - it is on my plans.  Those names don't ring a bell with any I have in my family tree, but there is a good chance that I could have missed some!  I hope to be able to get back into doing more research soon, so will keep this information on my radar.

    Once again, many thanks,

    Maree
