My great great grandparents John Dolan and Mary Bridgette Reilly immigrated to the US in the early 1860's. John came with his mother and siblings. Mary came alone. I am interested in finding out about the area and the relations I still have in Ireland.

  • Hi there,

I have a question for you, where did you find the information that they were from Templeport? How do you know that Mary travelled alone? If you have other information, please post it here, as this will help both me and others in the community to answer your query.

There are Roman Catholic church records for the diocese of Templeport (Kilmore). These start from 1836 for both baptismal and marriage records. These can be found at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 5345, or the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI), MIC.1D/78, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, ref. no. 0979703 item 6. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

There are some records you could check:

    • Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information.
    • You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

    • 1664 Hearth Money Roll, includes Templeport. PRONI 184
    • 1796 Spinning Wheel Premium List. 2,400 names for Co. Cavan
    • 1813-21 Freeholders. National Library of Ireland Ir. 94119 c 2
    • 1843 Voters list National Archives of Ireland 1843/71
    • 1851 Some certified copies of census returns for use in claims for old age pensions. National Archives of Ireland.

Here is a link about Templeport from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Templeport

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Sinead,

Thank you so much for your reply. Piecing together this family has been tedious. Most of the clues that I have are from Mary's obituary. I believe the information in it was given by her daughter as she was living with her at her time of death. The obituary stated that she came alone to the US where her childhood sweetheart had come ahead to make a home. It said that she was born in Clinticarnihan, Cavan, Ireland. I have come to the assumption that the town was Clontycarnaghan. In Griffith's Valuation 1848 - 1864 there are Reilly's there, and Dolan's in the neighboring Clonkurkney. Her death certificate had no information for her parents or birth other than Ireland.

They both arrived in New York. I have looked at port of arrival records many times and have a few possibilities, but as the names were common, I have not found anything conclusive. This also applies to their marriage. The obituary states that they married in New York before travelling to Illinois to farm. There are many marriages listed for John and Mary or Bridgette Dolan. There are specific dates listed in the obituary, but the US census records are different, so I am looking at a range of 3 or 4 years for the marriage and arrival.

Thanks again for your reply and for the links. I have not researched much outside of the US. I will be busy looking at these sites!
