Thank you for this, My mother's family is what I am looking up.  McNamee, this is what I have found so far,

F. B. McNAMEE, J.P. (Francis Bernard McNamee)

Francis Bernard McNamee, son of George McNamee and his wife Ellen Rehill, was born on the 7th of September, 1828, at Cavan, in Ireland, where he attended McCaffrey's (Independent) School, until, in 1839, the family sailed from Dublin, in the " Escort," commanded by Captain Minto, of Hartlepool.

I have tried finding info on this school, but nothing comes up.  Below is his family,

George McNamee, Francis Bernard's father
Birth 1805 in Cavan Town Urney Cavan Ireland

Ellen Rehill, Francis Bernard's mother
Birth ABT 1801 in Annagelliff, Cavan, Ireland

they also had daughters that was born in Ireland, Ellen McNamee, Birth 1827 in County Cavan, Ireland  and Catherine McNamee, Birth ABT 1838 in County Cavan, Ireland

son, George Richard McNamee, Birth ABT 1833 in County Cavan, Ireland

------

Francis McNamee, George McNamee's father
Birth abt 1786 in County Cavan, Ireland

Jane McGuire, George McNamee's mother
Birth in County Cavan, Ireland

They lived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

I always wonder if there were people left back in the "old country" wondering what had become of the families that left.

I found this in an old newpaper clipping:

10 October 1896         Missing Friends

info wanted

of James Byrne, of Kilkenny City, Ireland.  When last heard from, 5 years ago, was employed on the Grand Trunk Railroad, Montreal, Canada.  Any information of him will be gratefully received by John J. O"Gorman, 424 Dorchester Avenue, Boston, Mass., or his sister, Mrs. C Dowling, No 2 upper Patrick Street, Kilkenny City, Ireland

I am pretty sure this is one of my ancestors

kind regards,   Cindy Moynan, Knowlton, Qc Canada

  • Dear Cindy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

If you go to www.rootsireland.ie you will see that there is a church marriage record for a George McNamee. As this is a subscription site I am limited in what I can see. The marriage took place in Co. Cavan in 1823. There are also a number of Cavan baptism records for children born to a father George including: John, 1824, Eleanor, 1825, Francis, 1828, Susan, 1831, George, 1833, Catherine 1835 and Susan 1837. These may be the children of two different families or may all be your ancestor?s family. I think it would be a good idea if you take a look.

Assuming they didn?t all leave Ireland, there are some McNamee entries in Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864):

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=25&Submit.y=12&Submit=Submit&familyname=McNamee&firstname=&baronyname=&countyname=CAVAN&unionname=&parishname=

There are also McNamee entries in the 1901 Census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

If you know which (if any) of the family remained, you could also use the rootsireland site to find their marriage records (assuming they married). The girls would be a little easier to trace, if they remained in Cavan they would have married in their home parish (as recorded on their baptisms).

In relation to the school you could write to the County Museum in Cavan:

    http://www.cavanmuseum.ie/Default.aspx?StructureID_str=7

The school may have been a 'hedge' or 'pay' school, emerging from the time of the Penal Laws (early 1700s) when Catholics were prevented from attending school. While often times they were in actual hedges and ditches they were later housed in buildings; churches, sheds and other dwellings depending on the circumstances (before the national school system was formally established).

As far as the Missing Friends newspaper clipping goes, is it related to this family?

Let us know if you learn anything new.

  • Hi Clare,

thank you, I took a months subscription with RootsIreland and found them.  Got their baptism certificates, and George McNamee and Ellen Rehill' s wedding certificate also.  Both Susans are in the family, same parents so they were sisters.  I can't find death of Susan, I am asuming that the older Susan died?  Why else name two daughters the same name?

thank you for taking the time and helping me out.

planning on going to Ireland (County Cavan and Cork) this July

    kind regards,

    Cindy Moynan
