I am trying to find connections of Patrick McLaughlin and his wife Annie Duffy. Patrick was a railway engine driver, born in Derry abt 1862. Sadly Patrick fell to his death from his train in 1901 aged abt 39.
Patrick and Annie had two sons: Matthew (b1889) and Hugh (b1901).
I have found them all on census (1901 & 1911) but can't seem to find them after this. Who they married, children etc. Can anyone help?
They are one of two lost lines in our family. The other being John Mclaughlin and his wife Mary Farren (who I have enquired about in a recent message 16 May 2015)
To find present day connections would be amazing. Both Patrick and John are brothers to my gt grandfather Andrew McLaughlin. For some sad strange reason, there are no family stories about either of them. They were not known of at all. To connect with their descendants and fill in gaps and unite them all with us would be simply wonderful

Does this probate file by any chance relate to your Patrick McLaughlin? Died 7.3.1901 aged 39, death registered in Derry city? If so, PRONI in Belfast should have a copy of his probate file.
Administration of the estate of Patrick M'Laughlin late of Strabane County Tyrone Labourer who died 7 March 1901 granted at Londonderry to Annie M'Laughlin the Widow. Effects ?44.
Belfast Newsletter for 8th March 1901 has this brief item on page 4:
?Yesterday while a train on the Donegal Railway was passing under a bridge between Ballymagorry and Donemana the engine driver struck against the stonework and was killed.?
There may also have been an inquest, in which case there may be a file in PRONI.
Perhaps you can provide the links to the family in the 1901 & 1911 census to assist people trace the family for you?

Hi Ahoghill Antrim
Thank you so much for getting back to me. Yes indeed this is the Patrick I am looking for. Given that I already know the members of his family (wife and children; parents and siblings) I haven't bothered with a will. I thought it wouldn't really shed any more light in that regard.
As for the inquest, I found a lengthy detailed account in the Derry Journal.
It's his children I am hoping to find, Hugh and Matthew and their families. I'll keep on the hunt. LOL

Any help at all is deeply appreciated.

Jacqui,
For people employed in the railways in Ireland, it was quite common for sons to follow their fathers into the same business (as it was seen as reliable and well paid employment, in a country where that was not all that common). Perhaps Mathew or Hugh joined the Co Donegal Joint Railway, like their father.
Both PRONI and the National Archives in Dublin have extensive sets of records on the Co Donegal. I don?t know whether they contain employee records, you would need to check, but one of the other railway companies records in PRONI (the LMS) does contain employee details so you never know. Personal visits to Belfast and Dublin are generally required to access the relevant records.
You can see what files both PRONI and the National Archives have on the Co Donegal using their on-line sites. Search under Donegal railways or similar.
