I am trying to find connections of John McLaughlin and his wife Mary Farren. John was a railway engine driver. Born in Derry /Donegal abt 1861. John and Mary had 3 children that I know of: Sarah (b1887 d1913) Francess (b1889) and Mary (b1890).

I have found them all on census (1901 & 1911) but can't seem to find them after this. Who they married, children etc. Can anyone help?

They are one of two lost lines in our family. To find present day connections would be amazing

  • Jacqui,

I looked for a marriage for Frances post 1911. The only one in Strabane in the period 1911 ? 1920 was on 21.5.1913 to a Patrick Kelly. You might want to get a copy of that to see if it?s your family. (Father?s name and occupation should be the decider). You can view the certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the ?search registrations? option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

(You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs ?2 to a view a certificate).

It is then possible to search the GRONI indexes to see what children that couple had. However that information (ie births within the past 100 years) is not on-line. You either need to go to GRONI in Belfast in person and search there (fee ?8 for a days searching) or pay them to search for you.

I looked for possible marriages for Mary McLaughlin in Strabane but the name is too common and there are too many possible matches.

When and where did John McLaughlin die? Have you looked for a will, because that may help locate his children and grandchildren.

GRONI?s indexes indicate Sarah Jane was born 15.1.1887; Frances 3.2.1889 & Mary Josephine 28.2.1890. I looked for the 4th child that died young. However there appears to have been a second McLaughlin/Farren couple in Derry at the same time and so there are 8 possibles. Not easy to say which was to your couple, without paying to see up to 8 certificates.
