My goal is to find the father/mother of John Quigley from County Clare.

 

I reasonably believe that John Quigley was born between 1798-1815, likely in Co. Clare (or Co. Tipp) and the same would go for John's wife.

Around 1830, John Quigley and Winifred/Honora Callaghan lived in Bealkelly (Purdon) in the Ogonnelloe Parish in County Clare (1827 Tithe Applotment Books). 

They had children Patrick (1834 baptism) and Mary (1838 baptism). I'm sure they had other children, but I haven't confirmed that. Sponsors on those baptism's were Bridget Ftizgibbon, Js Melody, and Nora Healy.

 

Nearby John at this time was Daniel Quigley and Mary Farrell. I presume that Daniel is John's brother or first cousin. 

Also nearby John at this time was Michael Quigley and Bridget Mcnamara. I presume that Michael is John's brother or first cousin.

John's son, Patrick, moved to to Brooklyn NY (1850's) and then Westport, Connecticut. Patrick (and wife Margaret Murray) named his son's (oldest to youngest): John, Michael, Thomas, and James. 

I presume the father will have been born in County Clare or County Tipp in the late 1700's. It is very possible that his first name was Patrick, John, or Michael (that certainly doesn't narrow it down). Maybe there is a marriage record for J.Q. and the Callaghan girl.

Does anyone have the skills to figure out who John Quigley's potential father (i.e. Patrick's grandfather) was just based on the limited info above?

**Also, I am on Ancestry, My Heritage, and GEDMatch. It is worth adding that I am DNA related to a ton of Australians that claim ancestry through Co. Clare and Tipprerary. Also, I am likely related to the John Quigley who went to Walmgate York, England in the 1800's. I say that based on the fact that I have a ton of paternal English DNA relatives that all derive from York and there is no other explanation for that based on my ancestry history other than an Irish connection. When I look through the various trees and profiles of my York DNA matches, their Irish roots always go back to County Clare or Tipp and some mention the John Quigley name. Not to imply that is the same John mentioned above, but likely a family member.

I also see that I have many DNA matches/relatives that cite the following surnames in their ancestry:

Lynch, Casey, Pilkington,Mcnamara,Halloran,Morrissey,Meere,Fahy,Meany,Flanagan,Griffy,Howard,McMahon,Connors,Digaden,Dugan,Mulvihil,Fetherstone,Moloney and Ryan.

  • Eileen, thank you for the reply. Yes, I have the baptism record for Patrick. And I'm aware of the fact that it states Honora in 1834 and then Winifred in 1838 for Mary. I investigated that difference and came to the conclusion that Honora and Winifred are the same person (i.e. John Quigley of Belkelly had both children with the same wife).

     

    What I am seeking is the father of John. I presume that John's father was born in the late 1700's.

    Thank you for your post to the IrelandXO message board.  I am the County Clare Coordinator for the programme, and I am familiar with the area in Ogonnelloe that you have spoken of.

    I'm not sure if you have looked at the Clare Library website, but the parish registers have all been transcribed by a wonderful volunteer there, and you may be able to find out further baptism information for the Quigley family at the link below.
