I am searching for information regarding Catherine ( Katherine) Kinucane/Finnucan.from the Killdysert/Ballynacally area. There are several variations on the surname spellings so tracing her has become almost impossible.I have been through the Clare library  but can find no information regarding Catherine's birth, marriage or death..

This is what I know : Catherine married my great great grandfather James Coghlan probably in the 1850's. They had at least 2 children (twins Mathew and Thomas ) born in  October 1856 and baptised in Lowes Caherea - witnesses were Ellen and Thomas Clancy, Hanna Coghlan and Patt Coghlan. This information is from the National Library but is very difficult to read.

James passed in May 1891 and was at that time a widower so Catherine would have died between 1856 and 1891. James is listed in the Griffiths Valuations for Killdysert as are a John Finucane and a Martin Finnucan. Given their proximity to each other its probably reasonable to assume that Catherine may have been one of these men's daughters or sisters.

I have been to Clare and met my 'Coghlan" relatives but sadly they do not have any history past their own grandparents so any information that might help me learn a little more about Catherine  ( or James for that matter) would be most welcome. I will be travelling back to Clare in October this year to do some more research and hopefully discover more

I'm not the volunteer that Clare mentions in her note. I did look for civil death index records for a Catherine Finnucan with variant spellings in the Killadysert registration district. There were 3 records listed for Catherine Finnucanes but one was 1892 and the other 1893 so I eliminated them. The one below is a possibility. The year of birth shown was provided by an informant so this Catherine could have been a little older, otherwise if she really was born in 1840 she probably would not have had twins in 1856. if youm want to get a copy of this record from the General Register Office, let me know and I will provide instructions. A copy costs around 4 euros.

P.S. I did look for Kinnucan or variants and there were no records.

  • Thanks Roger - like you I don't think the Catherine born 1840 is correct. Name on death certificate would have been COGHLAN. I can find no trace under that name either. I am hoping one of Catherines father's descendants may see the message.

    Apprecaite your help

    regards

Sorry I searched under the wrong surname. I tried Coghlan and found two variant name records. The second one is a better possibility.
