Greetings from Australia,

Researching the Mungovan (and spelling variants) family from Drumcliff and Ennis.

My great great grandmother Anne Mungovan (born circa 1843) came to Australia circa 1861 from Ireland.  Her parents were James Mungovan and Anne Duffy.

Anne's brothers Patrick and Martin Mungovan also came later to Australia.

Patrick Mungovan (born circa 1834) was married to Susan Conors (O'Connor) in Drumcliff, Ireland and came to Australia with their children who were baptised at Drumcliff.

Martin Mungovan (born circa 1840) did not marry and had no children.

Anne also had a sister Bridget Mungovan (born circa 1833).

I am unsure if there were other children born to James Mungovan and Anne Duffy and would like to find more information about James and Anne (Duffy).

Hoping there are some Mungovan families out there who may recognise this family.

Regards to all

Suzanne

  • Hi Suzanne.

Worked up until recently with Mungovan from Ennis am in the process of trying to contact him in the meantime I see from Ennis school records there was  a Patrick there in 1898 I know your Patrick was in Australia at this stage it states that he lived in Mill St ,,,checked 1901 census of Ireland and can only see   a Mongoran ! family living there but if you look at actual writing it could be Mungovan .

Will get back as soon as have more info .

  • Hi Suzanne

Just spoken to chap I worked with and he tells me that locally a lot of work has gone into setting up the Mungovan family tree they actually had a day out where all the clan met  to launch it.

Apparently is his cousin done all the work so he is gonna contact her and I can forward your query.

Just came across this link online you may already be aware of it.

  • Hi Bill,

I can't believe that I received some interest in my post.  This is wonderful.  If and when you do have the time that you could forward my details on to the Mungovan family researcher that would be great.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if my Mungovan family were a part of the research done.

Thanks for the tip on The Genealogist website, I will delve into that a little more.

    Kindest regards and thanks,

    Suzanne

  • Hi Suzanne.

Have just spoken this evening with member of Mungovan family who has done a lot of research on your family tree .

There is a definitive Drumcliff connection at the very least so I have forwarded your initial letter to her and she is going to study it and see if she can find a connection.

She also tells me that Drumcliff cemetary records are now online might be worth a look so as soon as I hear back will pass info on to you.

  • Moira is my cousin - we did the Mungovan family tree day with the Quinns. Our Mungovans are from Inch and Kilmaley but we do think that there is a connection with Drumcliff the family say so  but dont know what . Mungovan is not a very common name and it is a very very old Clare name O'Mongabhain. My gt grandmother was Mungovan from Rathkerry Inch.

If you look on Clare library website you will see Cornelius Mungovan of the Sinn Fein club - he had a bar in Ennis and the family say he was a cousin but dont know the connection exactly.

i just sent Moira on some info I saw on Mungavins who went from Clare to India. one of them was head of the Pakistan police navy see below  from a message board

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My family name is Mungavin and originates in West Clare. Myself and my brother Dave have been researching and know the following :

James StJohn M - left Ireland c1825 and moved to India and worked on railways

(round about same time we have scant details of a Michael M who fought in the Indian Mutiny with the Lahore Cavalry)

son of above - James StJohn Mungavin - British army in India

son of above - George Mungavin - official in Indian railways

    children of above :-

Athelstan - Moved to Perth, Australia with wife Jean where family have survived him

Paddy - moved to Scotland post Indian independance - family survive him in Glasgow

Leslie (Jack) - commanded Pakistan Navy - died about 5 years ago - daughter Leslie in London

Gerry - Post Independence moved to UK - joined church of England and currently retired near Glasgow.

Laura - married in India and moved to Scotalnd with husband

Beryl - married & living in UK

    Phyllis - married in Scotland

It's proving easy to track down where we are at present and in actual fact because the Mungavins were all in public service of one sort or another in India that era again is quite clear, if a veritable roller-coaster of ups and downs. Where I think we'd like to estabish more detail is in West Clare and as to the family details of James StJ Mungavin who left in 1825.

  • Thank you so much for your interest.  I have been in touch with Moira and sent her some information as to where my Mungovan ancestors fit in.

Haven't come across any via India.  I think mine were just the poor working class labourers around Ennis.

Will keep in touch with any developments.  The County Clare Library has been of some help.

    Regards
