Hi there, I'm looking for information on my ancestors, Thomas Connellan and his wife Honora O'Loughlin who lived in the Lisroe area during the early 1800's. They are my great, great grandparents.

Their children were John, Mary, Catherine, Thomas & Michael but there may have been births that were unrecorded prior to John's birth in 1922.

Their son Thomas, came to Victoria, Australia with his brother John.

Thomas married Catherine Carroll & John married Ellen Greene.

Hoping that someone might have some info to share.

  • Hi,

I am transcribing baptismal records for Kilmaley 1828 - 1880.  This is on going at present.

I found two baptisms for children of Thomas Connellan and Honora O'Loughlin of Lisroe.

Mary Connellan baptised December, 1829  Sponsors:  John O'Loughlin and Catherine Murphy

Thomas Connellan baptised 19 October, 1831.  Sponsors: John and Mary O'Loughlin

I will let you know if I find any more.

  • Hi  and thanks.

I have baptismal records for  John, Catherine,Thomas & Michael.

I wonder if the Thomas baptised on 19 October 1831 died as a baby or died very young and another brother who was born in 1836 was named after him. The baptismal record for my great grandfather Thomas, (son of Thomas & Honora) is dated 14 April 1836 with godparents, Conor & Mary O'Loughlin and he died in Australia in 1917 aged 81.

Its interesting to note that he also had a young son called Thomas who died early and he too named his next son ( my grandfather) after the one who died.

Would you know of any historical societies in the area that might have a bit of information on the family?

I hope to go to Ireland one day and hopefully catch up with some family :)

    Thanks again

  • Hi,

When a child died and the next was also given the same name, it was tradition back then.

John Mayer has written a 200 year review on Families of Kilmaley Parish.  Conlan/Connellan of Lisroe features at least 8 pages in his book.  Face Book has an excellent Clare Board and may be your best online source to get in touch with your relatives in Lisroe.  John is also  a member.

Clare Roots Society are also on FB.  Clare County Library is an excellent site too.

    Good luck.

  • THE CONLAN’S OF LISROE, FURROOR

Among the largest family names located in any townland in Kilmaley Parish, is that of the Conlan/Connellan’s of Lisroe.  In the 1826 Tithe Applotment there were seven different Connellan’s listed.  They included: John Connellan and John Connellan, Jr., Thomas Connellan and Thomas Connellan, Jr., Patrick Connellan and Patrick Connellan, Jr and Michael Connellan.

    Thomas Connellan and Honor O’Loughlin

Thomas Connellan and Honor O’Loughlin had at least five children that we know of.  Here are the Baptism records for these children:

    • John Connellan born in 1822
    • Patrick Connellan born in 1824.  Died in Bungaree, Australia, in 1903.
    • Mary Connellan born December 22, 1829 (John O’Loughlin and Catherine Murphy)
    • Catherine Connellan born January 13, 1834 (John O’Loughlin and Mary Connellan)
    • Thomas Connellan born April 14, 1836 (Conor and Mary O’Loughlin)  Married Catherine Carroll in Australia, in 1867
    • Michael Connellan born September 14, 1838 (No Godparents listed)

By the time of the Griffith’s Valuation in 1855, there were four Connellan’s identified as renting land from William Henn.  Thomas (James) Connellan is renting two parcels.  The first is a small parcel of 38 perches, containing a house, offices and a garden, which is part of a larger parcel of land being rented by Michael Kinnucane.  The second parcel of land only contained 29 acres, three roods and fifteen perches.  Martin Connellan is identified as renting three parcels of land containing over forty acres and a house.  Thomas Connellan is renting two parcels containing over forty acres of land a house and offices.  There is a second house on the first parcel that is being inhabited by Patrick Hackett.  Finally, Patrick Connellan is renting eighteen acres, one rood and 33 perches of land containing a house, and offices.

  • Hello Cath,

I saw your post and though it's years old now I hope you're still there. I'm a descendant of a John Connellan (Conlon) who emigrated to Victoria in 1855. He is from Lisroe and his father was Patrick who must be the same Patrick Connellan listed on the Griffith's Valuations.

Patrick and his wife, Mary Gallagher had six known children, four of whom emigrated to Melbourne (including John) and ALL settled in Brunswick and living very close to each other. ive done a lot of work building their families and have lots of information now I could never have imagined.

I would say that we will be related in some way. Perhaps Patrick and Thomas are cousins (if it looks like Thomas' father was Thomas and Patrick’s Patrick, those two possibly brothers). It's a nice thought but on speculations at this stage.

I'd love to hear from you.

    cheers, Paul Selar.
