  • Hi
    Thank you for your message.
If you haven't already - You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
    or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/ for John & Hannah's relatives.

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. Have you checked the immigration records in Australia? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867. These are useful for finding out an exact place of origin as well as parents' names. The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au Otherwise, other records may be found in the Colonial Office Papers of the UK National Archives, class reference CO 201. This class contains a wide variety of records, including petitions for assisted passages, emigrants' lists, records of emigrants on board ship, petitions from settlers for financial assistance and much more.

The Clare County Library is an excellent resource for genealogy and local history - http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you.
Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

  • I have a nice photo of the grave of Edmond and Winfred Keane in Kilmaley Cemetery.  I may also have some additional information on the families.

The photo file was too large to attach, so if you want to e-mail me, I will send it your way.

  • Hi, I have a DNA match with a descendant of this couple. My direct line ancestor was also a Peter Murphy from Kilmaley, he had at least 2 sons. These were born about 1820 so in theory could be brothers to Hannah. Would be interested to know how information came about that Peter was married to the Crowe lady mentioned.

  • Hi, John Keane was a brother of my great great grandfather Denis who arrived in Australia in 1836 with his wife Susannah Powell and daughter Maria on the "Clyde". They went to Yass and were pioneers in the Coolac / Gundagai area. DNA tests show that my Garrynagy, Kilmaley and earlier ancestry possibly  Matthew Keane, Ballyashea, Kilnamona likely Denis' grandfather ie. Edmond's father; actually traces right back to the O'Cathains in County Galway in the Kinvarra, Kiltartan area.

  • Hi,

My earlier comment linking Edmund Keane, Kilmaley with Matthew Keane, Kilnamona was too specific. There is certainly a DNA  link but it is very distant. DNA however definitely shows Edmund Keane's ancestry goes back to County Galway. When the family left Galway is a big question.

    Regards,
