My ancestor Ellen BARRINGTON was born in Clare, Ireland about 1850 and migrated to Australia by 1877 to marry Matthew HAYES from Tipperary. Her father was Michael Barrington and her mother Margaret Guthrie, and she was from "Mill Town" (Milltown Malbay?). I have been searching the parish registers for her baptism and her parents' marriage with no luck, except I stumbled across a baptism for Ellen BURRANE, father Michael and mother Margaret Guthrie from 1845. Also a marriage between Michael Burrane and Margaret Guthrie.

Is it possible that Burrane is a variation of Barrington?

Many thanks,

Amy.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I think you have the correct record but I will ask someone from Clare if she has an opinion about Barrington/Burrane.

The townland shown on the baptismal record is Tromra East which is in Kilmurry Ibrickan parish. Milltown Malbay would be in Kilfarboy civil parish which is just to the north of Kilmurry Ibrickan. Emigrants tended to say they were from the nearest "big" town rather than the actual townland.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you for the welcome, and thank you for your help!

It's good to hear I am on the right track and it would be great to hear from someone from Clare if she has any thoughts.

I have my eye on a Michael Barrington in Quilty West in the 1901 census. He was living with his son-in-law Michael Power and daughter Mary Power who I am waiting to confirm is Ellen's sister. I'm sure the GRO is swamped with requests for certificates now that a lot of civil records are online.

That is a really useful tip regarding emigrants and the nearest big town. I'm sure I will find that helpful when searching for other ancestors in Tipperary.

    Thanks again for your reply,

    Amy.

My Co. Clare contact was not familiar with a Barrington/Burrane connection.

  • Amy,
I've done extensive research on the Barringtons in Clare and have concluded recently that Burrane was an earlier name that became Barrington for many by mid-19th century. I found my gggrandfather in Tithes and his burial site using Burrane. If you'd like to discuss further, let me know!

  • Hi Suzanne,

Thanks so much for your insight! I'm sure it will open many more doors for me. Have you come across "my" Barringtons / Burranes in your research? The Michael I mentioned lived in Quilty West after Ellen was born, Also referred to as being from "Caherrush". He died in 1906 and his wife Margaret in 1891. He lived with his daughter Mary and son-in-law Michael Power and their children by the time of the census in 1901.

    Many thanks once again,

    Amy.

  • Sorry, Amy. I missed your friend request. Please do again. Just yesterday I was looking at Kilmurry Ibrickan baptisms and saw your ancestor Ellen, baptized Nov. 1, 1845. Her sister Mary was baptized April 18, 1852 and listed as Barrington while Ellen was Buorane, not even Burrane.
Same pattern for another family appearing just below yours!
