Hi,

On researching my paternal family tree and have managed to trace my great grandparents from when they appeared on UK census records in 1861, both stating place of birth as Kilrush, Co Clare. From this I assume they must have been previously married in Ireland, as they had had twins in 1860 born in Lancashire. There is no oral history within the family to add substance to this information, and despite finding references to 'Nolans' using the Clare library online resources, I cannot glean if any of these are related. I am hoping that members of your site may be able to help or offer advice to progress my search.

The pertinent details of my great grandparents are as follows:-

Anthony Nolan born approx 1835 Kilrush Co Clare ; Mary Nolan (Nee Gallaher / Gallagher) born approx 1831 Kilrush Co Clare. (They had three children after arriving in Lancashire: Chronologically Michael (1860), John (1860) and Mary (1862). Their religion was Roman Catholic.

Thank you in anticipation of any replies

The RC records for Kilrush start in 1827 but they are not online at this point.

The National Library has announced that RC parish registers will be available for online searching next summer.

I also looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilrush parish. There was an Anthony Nolan listed in Knockerry West townland. Possibly this is your ancestor or an older relative.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the response and link to the Kilrush Griffiths listing. I had seen this previously, but as I do not know how the list was compiled in respect of what status and age persons had to fulfil to be listed, it was difficult for me to draw any real conclusions. I must admit, however, that it is heartening to see a few Nolans in the Kilrush Parish, although of those listed the only recurring christian names in our family are Anthony and John. I will watch out for the online access to RC parish registers, and hopefully these may provide  more tenable evidence..

    Once again, thanks

    Chris.
