Hi, Mary McDonnel is my great great grandmother who came to Australia on the pemberton in 1849 as part of the earl grey orphans transport scheme.

She married John Candy an englishman from Frome Somerset, settled in the wimmera, near horsham, in victoria.

Her Mother was Bridget McDonnel nee Caine, her father Simon McDonnel.

Mary was born 1831 and died 1907. She had 7 children.

I am trying to trace the family in ireland but to date have not had much success.

The passenger list shows her name as McDonald. Her death certificate shows Mc Donnel. I'm sure there may be other possibilities.

I do not know of the where abouts of her parents or siblings if any.

She came from a group of girls from Kilrush, also which is listed as her place of birth on her death certificate.

Any help or hints would be much appreciated

ta

  • Sinan McDonnell and Bridget Kean are recorded in the index to the Catholic baptismal register for Kilrush parish as having the following children:

    Mary baptised 12 Sep 1828

    Joan 19 Oct 1831

    Mary 16 Apr 1835

    Michael 25 Aug 1839

You will find additional details in the original register which is available on microfilm in the National Library of Ireland or Clare County Library or via the LDS Church.

  • Thanks for the results much appreciated. On finding her marriage certificate in victoria, mary was married i n st Peter's church melbourne. One of her witness's was a Johanna Mcdonnell. a companion on the Pemnberton ship which transported orhans from kilrush in 1849 listed a johanna with mary. Ages fit the years also. Would johanna be a variation used for joan or v v? I'm thinking this may be her sister with her at the wedding. any thoughts?

  • I'm wondering if your Simon McDonnell might be the father of my ggrandfather Simon McDonnell. My ggrandfather was born approx. 1925 in the Kilrush area of Co. Clare. He married Mary Collins about 1853. I have no records for him and do not know his father or mothers names.

He emmigrated to Ontario Canada in about 1864. I cannot find a passenger list for him, but I do have the passenger list for Mary McDonnell and their first 5 children who were born in Ireland. Mary came over to Canada in August 1865 on the "St. George" with Bridget age 10 (1854), Michael age 8 (1857), James age 5 (1860), Margaret  age 4 (1861) and Patrick age 1 1/2 (1863). They had 4 more children in St. Marys, Ontario. Simon died in 1890 and Mary lived until 1921.

Does anyone have any information on this family or might anyone be able to look for records at the catholic church in Kilrush? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • I do not think they are related. dates don't match up at all and Mary left Ireland for Australia in 1848 on the ship Pemberton as part of the earl grey scheme.

    Sorry, best of luck
