I am seeking information on my husbands grandfather Martin Joseph Molony. I believe he was born in Kilrush in 1881.  His fathers name may have been Patrick, unfortunately I have no other information on his birth family.  Sometime in the early 1900's he moved to London.  There he met Anne Kennedy, born to Michael Kennedy and Bridget Sexton in Killadysert in 1889.  They were married in 1910 and had 5 children, Patrick Joseph (PJ), Martin Francis (Frank), Kathleen, Terence (my father-in-law) and Desmond.

While living in London he started a textile business with his brother-in-law John O'Sullivan who was married to Anne's sister Helena (Lena).  Although the family lived for decades in London they were staunchly Irish, travelling back and forth between Dublin and London.  At some point Martin established a Dublin presence for his business now called Martin Molony & Sons. He died in Dublin in 1950 and Frank and PJ continued to run the business until the 1990's.

Any information you can provide on the early years of Martin would be greatly appreciated. I have been searching for several years without luck.

  • Hi Maureen

There is a record of the baptism of Martin Molony in Clare 1883 on www.rootsireland.ie/

Kilrush is not in the list of parishes but this one is from ENNIS RC

    Father's name is not Patrick

The site charges to view the full record which MAY have the parents' names

  • What name,. if any, is given for Martin Joseph Molony's father on his 1910 marriage certificate?

If the marriage certificate says Patrick, what reason to you have to doubt it?

Did he move to London before or after the 1901 census?

Are you certain that he was too old to be the Martin Moloney at

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Clare/Kilrush/Durha/10… ?

Does your evidence suggest that he was born in Kilrush parish, or just somewhere in the much larger Kilrush Poor Law Union?

I have obtained a copy of the marriage license of Martin Molony and Annie Kennedy.  Martin was born in Killimer and his father was Patrick.  Unfortunately at the time of the marriage Patrick was deceased.      Any information would be appreciated.
