I am tracing my great grandmother born in 1858(approx) who I believe emigrated to New South Wales,Australia as a 19 year old in 1877 on the ship 'Nineveh' sailing from Plymouth. She was assisted or sponsored by James Carey of Tamworth,Australia and may have travelled with a Bridget Carey who appears after her on the shipping document. She went onto New Zealand and married Daniel Mahoney in Timaru in 1881 and died in the early 1920's.

The shipping document stated she was from Cappa Kilrush,County Clare and a servant.

Her father was Thomas and as far as I am aware he was a farmer

If anyone can help trace the actual birth date and place for Maria I would be most grateful.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked on Find My Past for a baptismal record for Maria Dillon in Kilrush and was not successful in finding a record. The records for Kilrush parish start in 1827 and here is a link to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0808

I also looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilrush parish and did not see any Dillon records although there were about 10 Carey records http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/clare/kilrush.htm  I checked another site and the only Thomas Dillon records in Co. Clare were in Feakle civil parish which is in the eastern part of Clare

There is a townland in Kilrush parish called Cappagh.

Any other clues, siblings? Have you considered autosomal DNA testing.

We do have two parish liaisons in Kilrush and I will e-mail them to see if they can add more insight.

  • Good afternoon Roger, thank you for your investigations.I have attached the two documents I have Maria, her wedding certificate which I know is for my great grandmother as I can trace the line afterwards.I have also attached the immigration information into Austrlia for a Maria Dillon. The year of birth fits and there is no other information in Australian records that I can find to show she married and died in Australia. This leads me to believe she left Australia for New Zealand between 1877 and 1881.New Zealand has very good immigration documentation but I cannot find her arrival into New Zealand. This may be because she was already classed as an immigrant and the authorities didn't record those moving from Australia to live in New Zealand at that time.

I have a lot of information from Ireland on her husband Daniel Mahoney and in fact we visited the townland he came from Knocknagree,Count Cork just a couple of months ago.

You will notice that Maria's bithplace on her wedding certificate appears to have been written as it was spoken to the person preparing the wedding certificate at the time.I have not been able to find any place in Ireland that is the same as that written down. With the name starting with 'Lock.....' her birth place may relate to a 'Lough' or lake but I have not been able to match that up to any lough/lake with the second part of the word.

I am as certain as I can be that she was a Roman Catholic.

If this additional information is any use you are free to use it to help in the search.

I looked at all the townlands in Clare starting with Lough and did not find one close to Kilrush. I thought possibly it might be Loughrask but that townland is in very north Clare quite a distance from Kilrush.
