My family are from County Clare and I would like to find out where they are from in the county, as I would like to make a special pilgrimage in their memory.

Our sirname is Scanlan, and there seem to have been quite a few Francis Edward Scanlans through about 3 generations at least. I believe there is now a hotel which was once a castle that my family owned.

From Ireland the family went to England and then to New Zealand.

I would like to hear from any Scanlans in the county, as I'm sure there will be a link somewhere.

I would be grateful for any imformation.

Thank you

Kerry Scanlan (New Zealand)

  • Kerry,

I also have relatives from County Clare.  Through Ireland Reaching Out I learned about the excellent genealogy collection, a good deal of which is on-line, that the Clare County library has.  You can check it out at: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/

Good hunting.  BTW, my relatives from County Clare were O'Brien and Dougherty.

  • Hi Kerry:

I just saw your post and I heartily endorse what Bill has said.  Please go to the Clare County Library website and start your research from there.

You can look through Griffith's Valuation and the Tithe Applotment Books by surname and that might be the best way for you to start as you appear to be pretty sure of the name of Francis Edward Scanlan.

The very best of luck to you and if you need any further information, please contact me through the Tulla link.
