McMahon family from Tuamgraney

Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any McMahons still in the area at the time? You can search these here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You could also try looking in Church records for more information on the family. Most Catholic records are held locally so it may be an idea to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website which you may find useful is the Irish Times. Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so if Catherine died after this year there will be a record of her death in the General Registers Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

If her death was before this time, you may be able to find her burial record in the local parish.

Have you tried looking for the family in either of the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century? There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/     

It may also be a good idea to look into Michael and Patrick?s emigration as sometimes more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867 for New South Wales.

The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au Otherwise, other records may be found in the Colonial Office Papers of the UK National Archives, class reference CO 201. This class contains a wide variety of records, including petitions for assisted passages, emigrants' lists, records of emigrants on board ship, petitions from settlers for financial assistance and much more.

Parish of Tomgraney/Tuamgraney - Bodyke RC Chapel Records as my main source - Clare Heritage Centre Research 

My great great grandmother was Anna Mary McMahon from Ballyvannan, County Clare, Ireland.  She was born 11 Jul 1852, and died in Scarriff Jan 1943.  I have more.  The specific property location where the McMahon's lived was referred to as Revale/Revail/Reveal or varitation of this as the property designation, Caherhurley area, Ballyvannan, County Clare, Ireland.  As I understand it, the likely address probably would read (even maybe today) as Revale, Ballyvannon, County Clare, Ireland.  I have been tempted to send mail addressed to McMahon or Coughlin and see if it arrives.  Maybe?  Hoping someone could say here.  I have other relatives in Louth and the similar format of their address is how they get their mail.  Anyway,  Anna Mary McMahon married Daniel Coughlin on 10 Feb 1872 as indicated in the Kilnoe and Tomgraney RC Marriage Register.  Daniel Coughlin was from the same area but his roots in the area appear to demonstrate he was more transient as a shepherder, or at least his father was such.  He was born 22 May 1836 in that area and direc Sep 1919 in Scariff.  Anna and Daniel had 16 children, many of whom moved to the USA.  A few remained in Ireland.  I have birth record info as the source is the Bodyke RC Chapel records from the of at least 1870 to 1890s.  The Clare Heritage Centre did a full write on the Coughlin's.  The McMahon information is a bit more minimal since my cousin was seeking Coughlin at the time.  That's fine because it got me this far.  Anna Mary McMahon's parents were Patrick McMahon (b. 1810 and died Jun 1885 at Revale) and Mary McNamara (b. 1810 and I don't have her death date and location).  When I've looked census in the past, I seem to recall seeing at least another McMahon and definitely McNamaras nearby and/or even on the same premises and/or adjacent property.  To attempt to round this off, my great grandmother was Johanna Coughlin, daugther of Anna and Daniel Coughlin.  When she was growing up in this area, she indicated reading and doing schoolwork while sitting under the tree at the Rock of Tomgraney/Tuamgraney Rock in Balleyvannan.  That's just a bit anecdotal anyway.  She left Ireland around maybe 1910 and would tell her grandchildren that she left Ireland because all of the men were leaving.  Her best chance at getting married was to come to America.  I do have brief information that Daniel Coughlin's parents were James Coughlin and Anne Gooney.  If anyone has more information about the McMahon's and the reference to the property location, I would love to know more.

I am wondering if their might be a connection between our Mcmahon trees. Like you my Mcmahon tree comes from Tomagraney and like you I have had a very hard time trying to fill in my tree.  My great grandfather was Timothy McMahon (b1841) who married a Mary Horton (b1841) in 1864.  They had 8 offspring with all but three coming to the United States.  They were tenet famrers on land owned by George Fitzgerald who resided in England.  The farm consisted of plot 13 and 15 and was located on teh Corrakyle road.  Specifically i am wondering if Timothy might have been a son of your Michael Mcmahon and Catherine Griffin and a brother to your Patrick... The dates would be close !!!

On Michaels death cert the only issue is Patrick who was 47 when his father died in 1886 Vic Aust.

Michael coughlan. Is my name. I am a direct descendant of Daniel Coughlin. The surname in Ireland is spelt with an A. They changed it to I when they got to the US. Johanna's niece still lives in central valley in New York. My kids are now the only descendants of the 16 kids born to Daniel Coughlan and Ann McMahon. I know all the areas mentioned and burial places. The tree in the rock is in the Village of Tuamgraney and can be seen on Google maps.My dad is buried beside Ann McMahon who died in 1943.
