My G Grandmother, Annie Angel Butler was baptised in Cork in 1861. The attached bap. cert. was made out 51 years later and the family thinks that the name Mary Ann for the baby was a mistake, perhaps her mothers name was written in place of hers. she always went by Anna or Annie. Family lore says she was born on Guernsey, and christened as Ena Angel, and then baptised back home in Cork. ??  She moved to the states in about 1877, had 9 fine children while living in Ohio, and died in 1950. I feel lucky to have found this birth certificate, which I think is actually hers. She would perhaps have gotten it in 1912 to get a passport for travel.   I would love to find more about the family in Cork.

Where did she live? Any sign of brothers or sisters?

Any sign of emigration about 1877? Alone or with her family?

Who is the Sponsor Mary Sheridan? Is that a different maiden name for her mother? So much hinges on so little.

A thousand thanks to anyone who has any answers, or can point me in the right direction.

Happy St Brigids Day to you

  • Have you searched the records in Guernsey for a birth certificate? They appear to be held in the Priaulx Library in St Peter Port. See:

The sponsor on the baptism would not be the mother. It has to be someone other than a parent. Typically it’s a close friend or relative. (And there normally should be two, though you sometimes just get one).

  • Thank you. I will check Guernsey.

There are 2 Sponsors. The attached baptism cert shows John Butler and Mary Anne Angel as parents and John Butler and Mary Anne Sheridan as sponsors.
It is in 1861at SS PETER AND PAUL in Cork. Are there any census or household records for Cork at this time?

  • The censuses for 1861 to 1891 were completely destroyed. There are some fragments for 1841 and 1851, mainly from pension applications. They  are on Ancestry if you have  subscription:
