When I search irishgenealogy.ie for Scimilihane in Cork, I get 4. 3 of them are an Ellen Scimilihane (which happens to be the name of my 3rd great grandmother) in Clonakilty as witness to baptisms of a person named Conosig. That name sounds like a branch name, and I am wondering for what? Sue

Hi Sue,
Thanks for your message. I'm not sure what you mean by branch name?
Conosig is certainly a rare name in Ireland. There was only one Conousig recorded in Griffith?s Valuation in the whole country:
You can see other variations of the name on the IRish TImes website and also what other sources the name was recorded in, here is the link:

Hello, my 3rd great grandmother was married under the name Ellen Scimillihane but her children were born with her name given as Mahony. I have been told that Scimillihane is a "branch" name of Mahony. I guess there may be other terms for this? Family name? what would you call it? My question is that Conosig doesn't sound like a "real" name but a branch name for some one else and I wondered what??? could it be Neil??? (Ellen Mahony/Scimillihane married Jeremiah Neil) or Mahony? Thanks.
Irish Times didn't seem to find that name. And, the Griffiths reference is quite a ways from where my 3rd great grandparents lived?
