I have been searching for years to find where my husband's great-grandmother came from.  Every opportunity she had to write her birthplace she only ever put County Cork.  She was Ellen Twomey born abt 1840 to Matthew Twomey and Ellen Leyhane.  The only record I have ever found mentioning these parents together was the pension application census search for two of her siblings and that stated their place of residence was Aghabulloge.  I have checked the online microfilm for the parish but found no record of their marriage, her baptism or any siblings.  I hope someone can offer some suggestions.  We are hoping to visit in 2017 and I would love to know exactly where to find more about them and their location.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland and the only possible record was in 1841 in Ballyvourney. See transcription below. Ballyvourney is three parishes to the west of Aghabulloge. The mother's name is shown as Ellen Lynch which is close to Leyhane. I would consider this record as a lead.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Thank you Roger.  That lead sounds promising.  Do you know if original parish registers are available for either of these parishes.  Any suggestions as to where to look for burials?  A headstone would be a real find.    Regards Lyn

  • At last some progress.  By searching through the parish microfilms I found this family in the Aghinagh baptisms with place of residence shown as Leeds.  I think that is Leades as they were previously found at Leadawillin.  Found Matthew Twomey there in 1852 tithe applotment and have identified his plot so I know where to visit now.  Can anyone tell me which cemetery would be nearest to here?  Are there any records online?  Thank you, Lyn Beard

I'm not in Ireland. We do not have parish liaisons for either Aghabulloge or Aghinagh parishes. Historic graves.com has the location of the Aghabulloge cemetery http://historicgraves.com/graveyard/aghabullogue/co-agha  but I don't think they have any records on their site. You could also check out findagrave.com   You may also want to contact the churches in Aghabulloge and Aghinagh to see if they can clarify the location of the cemeteries.
