Looking for additional information on the Ahern/Barry Family.  I visited Whitegate in March 2013 and was able to visit the gravesite of Edmond, Bridget, Ned, and Mary Ahern.  Ned and Mary's last address was 3 Trabolgan Road. I am trying to find out the maiden name of Mary Barry, Bridget Ahern's mother.  Bridget also had a brother named Bartholomew and I am not aware of any other family, and her father's name was Patrick Barry.

I am interested in finding out more about Edmond's parents -- I believe their names were Edmund Ahern and Bridget Walsh.

My grandfather, Patrick Joseph Ahern, was born in Whitegate in 1884, address Barrack Street, and was baptized in the Catholic Church in Aghada Parish -- St. Erasmus?    I would like to find out when he was baptized.  He immigrated to the United States in 1899.

My visit to Whitegate was very memorable and met so many kind people who were very kind in helping me.

I appreciate any assistance you can provide.  I feel such a close connection to Whitegate, and I hope to return in a few years.

Thank you!    Ann Ahern Hanson

I went to www.familysearch.org  to look for birth or baptismal records for Patrick Ahern. I located a birth index record for a Patrick Ahern born in the early part of 1884 in the Middleton registration district which includes Whitegate. There was also a Patrick Ahern born in 1881 and two in 1885 all in the Middleton district. If you want a copy of this record, go to www.groireland.ie  fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of deat, registration district and the volume and page number (4 and 684). Costs around 4 euros.

Can you also clarify the names of Patrick's parents and how Edmond, Bridget, Ned and Mary Ahern relate to Patrick? Thanks.

  • My grandfather, Patrick Joseph Ahern, had 2 brothers and 1 sister.  One brother, John immigrated to Australia. Another brother, Edmund ("Ned"), and sister, Mary Bridget, lived in Whitegate and their last known address was 3 Trabolgan Road.  Mary passed away in 1976 and Ned passed away in 1983.

Their parents were:  Edmond Ahern, born ABT 1850 and died at sea in 1900.  He was in the Royal Navy and his remains were buried in Liverpool.  His mother, Bridget, was born ABT 1858 and passed away in November 1944.  In her later years, she lived with her children Ned and Mary prior to her death.  Her maiden name was Barry, and she had a brother, Bartolomew, who immigrated to the United States in 1880, and my grandfather Patrick immigrated to the United States in 1899.  He lived with his Uncle Bartholomew and family for awhile before marrying around 1909/1910.

Bridget Barry Ahern's mother was named Mary; however, I am trying to determine her maiden name.  Mary was married to Patrick Barry.

My grandfather's birth date was October 4, 1884; however, I was informed that his birth and baptismal registration may not have occurred until 1985.

    I hope this helps.

  • Ann:

I think the record below should be the birth index record for your Patrick. You can contact the GRO www.groireland.ie as I mentioned in my first note. I looked at www.irishgenealogy.ie for a baptismal record for Bridget Barry. This site has a lot of Cork church records but not all of them. I did find one in 1861 for a Bridget born to a Patrick Barry and Mary Donovan, however, the baptism was in Bantry which is in West Cork. Aghada parish is in East Cork. Unless Edmond met her when he was in the Royal Navy and his ship docked in Bantry? Check out the site and see wht you think.

  • Thank you so much for your quick response.  I am not sure if this is the correct Bridget Barry with parents Patrick and Mary Donovan.  My uncertainty involves her brother, Bartholomew, who was born in 1858 and there was not record of his baptism.  Bartholomew immigrated to the United States in 1880s, and provided his home to my grandfather, Patrick Joseph Ahern in 1899 when he immigrated to the United States.   Could Patrick Barry have a middle name of Bartholomew?  And, of course the baptism dates would be way off if Bartholomew was born in 1858.

I too will do more searching on this.  This is a great start.  And, I do appreciate your prompt attention.

I always have a big smile when I get a note from you.  It means so much to me for the Ahern Family in the United States, and my Ahern Family in Australia.  I was fortunate to be on Ancestry the same time as my 2nd cousin, and we are currently sharing information.

    Thanks again!   Ann Ahern Hanson
