Just wanted to know if anyone out there is working on the Bride Family tree for the Bride family of Aghada - lower and upper?

I've not made a lot of progress but would like to collaborate if there is someone. They are confusing as the same names are used.

Thank you

  • Thank you Col,

So this is what I have:

I have Richard Bride who may have been born around 1810 and who married Hannah and had two daughters Abigail in abt. 1839 and Ellen in 1842 . Richard owned the Public house - The Imperial Hotel,  on the waterfront in Lower Aghada and passed it onto his daughter Abigail and his son inlaw John Burgess when they married in 1858. There is a family story that Hannah's surname was Fitzgerald but I've not been able to locate any records to substantiate this. She did have a son Michael Magnor prior to her marriage to Richard Bride. I can't find anything about this either.

I know that Richard had a relative Johanna Bride christened in April 1859 at Aghada at the same time as John and Abigail Burgess' son Edmond. Johanna's parents were Richard Bride and Catherine Murphy and a sponsor was Patrick Bride. I believe they were related because at a later date, Edmond and Johanna (cousins?) were sponsors at the baptism of one of Edmond's younger siblings. How were they connected? I don't believe Richard and Hannah Bride had any son's, but given that the first son is usually named after the father's father, is there an Edmond Bride at Aghada? are there any records for him?

I'm trying to work out how these people are all related.

I'm also trying to confirm Hannah's real surname and where she is from .

Because there are quite a number of  Abigail Bride and Richard Bride s in the records, it all gets a bit confusing. I found no gravestones for the Burgess family or Hannah and Richard Bride in the cemeteries I visited in Aghada. Is there a cemetery map? they were roman catholic.

I already have the records for the children of Abigail/Abina/Abinea/Abbey(she changed it with the season) and John Burgess. The only questions there are in regard to John Joseph Burgess born 1860 and William born in 1876 - both in Aghada. I cannot find any records for what happened to either of them.

It would be wonderful if someone's research links in with this, thank you!

  • Hi Barred,

You don't mention the sources you've tried so I'm not sure if you've seen the following from www.rootsireland.ie/:

    No siblings records I'm afraid

    www.irishgenealogy.ie/ has this:

There are a few Michael Magnors with mother Ellen but no surname Canty.

I couldn't find a death record for either Burgess

No  Edmond Brides in Aghada; on rootsireland Aghada R C parish has 75 Bride baptisms  1834 to 1894; 41 marriages 1837 to  1885 but no death records

Have you looked at the Irish Censuses (free at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/)

There are a couple of John & Henry Burgess listings in Cork in the 1901 & William in 1911

    I assume you've checked Family Search & ancestry.com

  • Thank you Col!

I just realised that your reply was here - sorry! I will carefully go through what you have sent. The marriage you list of Richard Bride and Hanah Canty is my lot. I wish they'd filled in parents names as it would save me a lot of searching! There seem to be quite a number of Richard Bride s in the Aghada area at that time which is leaving me with a real juigsaw puzzle.

I feel I've exhausted places I can search on Ancestry and the other data banks and was hoping that somewhere out there there may be someone else sorting through the Bride family tree.

I haven't established Hanah Canty's origins either so it is not proving easy. Hanah may have been married to Michael Magner's father but reverted to her maiden name for the marriage to Richard Bride. As I've mentioned, there was story that her maiden name was Fitzgerald but I've never been able to locate a marriage of a Richard Bride to a Hannah Fitzgerald which has just made the mystery greater and left me to believe that I'm on track with Canty.

Fingers crossed there are yet to be discovered Aghada records we will be able to access in the future!

I've looked at the other Burgess families in the district around Aghada on censuses and find that they are mostly farming families and not likely to be connected to our family.  I tend to discount them because our John Burgess is said to have arrived in Aghada form Templemore Tipperary - Not that I can find any evidence of his existence there either. They are a mystery!

Col, would you know if there is an old 19th century burial map for the Roman Catholic Church graveyard at Aghada that would enable one to discover the burial location of the unmarked Burgess graves?

    Thank you!

  • ColI'm not aware of a map, sorry.

I had a look on this site http://historicgraves.com/graveyard/aghada-old/co-agdo which has some 20th century Brides but no Burgesses I'm afraid.

Will be visiting family in Cork in September & may get some time to have a look then.

Can you specify any particular Burgess graves you'd like found; are you after Brides & Cantys too?

Hi, my name is Jeremy Bride and I have been working on the Bride family tree for sometime. It is mostly my branch which was headed by my great grandfather Henry Nelson Bride and his wife Ellen Bride nee Burke. They went from Cork to Australia with their children (my grandfather was William). I would be grateful if you have any information that may help me too. I have attached 2 files, I hope they help or at least be of interest.

    regards

    Jeremy

  • Hi Jeremy.

I too, have been researching the Bride side of my family.

The connection comes from my Great Grandmother, Annie Conroy, nee McGillicuddy (1866)

A Daniel McGillicuddy married an Ann Bride on 28/08/1872 in the parish of Aghada. Ann's father listed on the marriage certificate as Richard Bride, deceased. I'm not sure if Daniel is her brother.

When Annie Conroy gave birth to her 4 children, (2 died in infancy) and the surviving daughter, Hannah Maria Conroy is my maternal grandmother, a Mary and Margaret Bride was listed as present at birth.

In the 1901 census, William Conroy, (my great uncle) aged 3 resident in house 23 in Aghada Lower (Corkbeg, Cork) Margaret is aged 30 and head of household, Mary is 27 and relationship to William is nephew. Neither Margaret or Mary are married.

In the 1911 census, Margaret is 45 and head of family. Hannah Maria Conroy, my grandmother is now living with William and Margaret, and relationship is Aunt.

There is a marriage in 12/08/1913 between Margaret Bride and a Thomas Lane, in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Aghada.

Witnesses are John Gallio and Katherine Bride.

Margaret's father is named Thomas and is listed as deceased, but alive in the 1911 census and aged 86.

1911 cnesus of a house 13 in Aghada Town Lower:

    Thomas Bride (86) - Head

    Mary Bride (74)  - Wife

Abina Bride (52) - Daughter, single.

Katherine Bride (39) - Daughter, single

Margaret Bride (37) - Daughter, single.

Hope this helps and look forward to hearing what you've discovered?

    Janey

  • Hi everybody. Did anyone look at my family tree? Hopefully you did and found a connection...I would love to hear about it. I'm still searching for more of my grandfather and beyond. I was hoping to return to Ireland this year but unfortunately the coronavirus has put an end to that for now. I would love to hear from anybody...j_bride@internode.on.net

I come late to the party.

I did look at your tree but did not see me, wish I did.

My g2-grandfather was Richard Bride of Aghada , possibly of Maurice and Johannah Coleman, wife unknown possibly Bridget or Hannah, and family Patrich, David and Joannah. David was my g-grandfather.

I found this group as I was searching for a possibly transacription of a will belonging to Richard Bride of Aghada and wife Hannah. I find the text too low resolution to proceed far. Anyone seen this and transcribe it?

  • There is a Margaret Bride in the 1911 census house 6 lower aghada, who was listed as the aunt to my grandmother, Hannah Maria Conroy, and great uncle William David Conroy who died in 1916 at sea aged 19.

There is a Margaret Bride listed as having married a Thomas Lane in 1913, listed as a spinster. Father listed as Thomas Bride, deceased. Sailor.

    My family surname is Quaine.

The surnames associated with my family tree are

Conroy, McGillicuddy, Mahoney and various spelling of Quaine.

the areas are Midleton, Lower Aghada, Queenstown (now Cobh)

I have also seen the name Abina Bride as well listed.

A site I use very freqently is irishgenealogy.ie

hope this helps and look forward to an update.
