My paternal grandfather, Michael Holmes (youngest of 7) was born in County Cork May 15, 1862, died in Northern California 1939. His father was John Holmes b1808, mother Johanna O'Leary b1821. The Holmes family were farmers with upwards of 40 pieces of property showing on Griffiths Valuation. Two of Mike's older brothers left for the USA in 1868, the rest of the family followed in 1872. They origially settled in Williamsport PA with John, Johanna and Joseph moving to Kansas to join oldest son Richard before 1880.

What religious denomination were the Holmes family.? No RC records are turning up on the subscription site Roots Ireland. The Church of Ireland records are held locally.
