They way I found them was by searching for the location - select Cork, the enter Aghada in the Townland/Street field, and then looked for any McCarthys. Mc/Mac names can be difficult to find as they may be recorded with a variety of spelling, with or without a space, or without the Mc/Mac.

Thanks again :)  I'm not sure what I was doing wrong, but I tried today and it seemed to work. Interesting that there is no sign of my great grandfather. It looks like he was still around as more children were born between 1901 and 1911 and I believe my grandfather had one more sister.  I vaguely remember hearing he was at sea.  His occupation on my grandfather's birth cert said  "Petty Officer RN".  I wonder did they live in my great grandparent's family home with the unmarried sister.  I guess we will never know :)  Too bad that there's a gap in the prior census. Thanks again for your help!  Just now starting on the genealogy and it quickly becomes addicting!
