Hi. I'm from Sydney Australia and am trying to seek information on my G G Grandparents Michael (possibly Michael Francis) Barrett and his wife Mary Tobin who emigrated to Sydney Australia aboard the Bermondsey arriving in May 1855 with 2 children, Elizabeth Barrett (born c 1851 and died in Sydney 1858) and Francis Barrett (born c 1848 and died in Sydney in 1922). Both children were born St Finbarrs) according to passenger manifests. A number of other children (4 or 5) were born in Cork prior to the family's migration but it is suspected that these perished in Ireland prior to their departure. One child (my G Grandfather, William Henry) was born in Sydney.
Passenger manifests indicate that Michael was born in St Finbarrs c 1806 (parents Thomas Barrett and Elizabeth ??) and died in Sydney in 1863. He was a stonemason by trade.
Mary Tobin was born c 1810 in Aghada Cork and died in Sydney in 1878. Her parents were Maurice Tobin and Bridget Fitzgerald.
Michael & Mary were married in Aghada in August 1832 and according to a reference we have located, Mary's address is listed as " The Union". Whether this is a reference to a suburb of Cork or a workhouse is unknown.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Go too www.irishgenealogy.ie
I located a possible baptismal record for Thomas Barrett on August 23rd 1804 at the Cork South parish (St. Finbarrs).
The Aghada records are not on this free site but rather Roots Ireland a subscription site. You may want to wait until next summer when the National Library will have all Catholic parish registers online for free searching.

Thankyou very much for your feedback. This looks extremely promising. I will need to satisfy my curiosity about Thomas' occupation as a "soldier". I wonder in who's army?
Thankyou once again

Thankyou very much for this information. It is essentially in sync with a comment on Michael's death certificate in NSW which stated 4 children deceased. The dates for Francis and Elizabeth are consistent with our records here so I have no reason to doubt that the other children also belonged to Michael and Mary but most likely died in Ireland. I know also of a baptism of another "Elizabeth" to the couple in Aghada 12 Sept 1833. I believe the daughter Elizabeth who was baptised in 1851 (and came to Australia) was named in memory of the earlier Elizabeth who died.
Thankyou once again

Thankyou for this. Its a wonderful find. It looks like Mary had a sister Bridget. I wonder if she survived and married? Another line of investigation to follow.

I have a Thomas Barrett who shows up on baptismal records in the early 1800's as a soldier in artillery. I wondered whether anyone might know which army he might have been in? English ? Irish? Would be grateful if anyone has any clues I can follow up on. Regards Pablo (Paul)

Mary Tobin's Aghada address as supplied on her marriage registration to Michael Barrett is "The Union". Would this be the union workhouse or is there some part of Aghada area known as "the Union"? Any help would be appreciated. Regards Pablo (Paul)
