Trying to research my wife's Irish ancestors who came from Aghada, County Cork:

John Brown married Johanna Walsh (bap 13 Jan 1870 in Aghada) about 1902 and had two children including Mary (or Molly) who married & had two children - a boy & a girl. Reportedly she ended up in Boston, Mass. but we don't know the name of her spouse so have met a brick wall.

John Brown was in the Merchant Navy but such a common name makes it hard to research. He was  born around 1865-1868 but we don't know exactly when so cannot trace his parents. It's another brick wall. John and Johanna remained living in Upper Aghada.

Would love to hear from anyone who has a connection to the Brown name in the Aghada area .... or anyone who could help me break through the brick walls!

Rich

  • I have a hint on Ancestry from a New york passenger lists that has the following names:

Patrick 48, Winifred 48, John 17, Mary 20, 3 illegible names, one pssoiblu thomas and the other Cathr, Mary, Anne and Biddy.  The ship is the Garrick and it sailed from Liverpool, 20 Jan 1848, and arrived in New York.  The source is:  Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897. Microfilm Publication M237, 675 rolls. Records of the U.S. Customs Service, Record Group 36. National Archives at Washington, D.C.

While I have a Patrick, family lore is wthey arrived in 1850 and his wife was Fanny.  hopefully this helps another Walsh.

I believe that this is the civil marriage index record for John Browne and Johanna Walsh. It was registered in the Cork registration district rather than the Middleton district which included Aghada parish. You will note that a Joanna Walsh was one of the spouses listed on the page. You can get a copy of the marriage record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1902. Instructions for getting a copy are below the index record.

    Roger McDonnell

    First Name John
    Last Name Browne
    Year 1902
    Registered Quarter/Year Apr - Jun 1902
    Registration District Cork
    Volume 5
    Page 91
Potential Spouse Names Mary Anne Sheely, Mary Power, Joanna M Walsh, Mary Anne Shealy, Ellen Lynch

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Thanks Roger. Really useful to know about the GRO in Roscommon. I was not sure of the marriage year and there are quite a few Brown-Walsh marriages in the Cork area, but for 4 Euros it's worth a punt.

However it took some time to find somewhere nearby that still had a fax machine - even the main library does not have one anymore - the main post office did but it cost £2. It would be so much easier if the GRO in Roscommon used something like a PayPal system.

  • The GRO came back & disappointingly it's not a right match ... so it's back to the drawing board (or brick wall). Of course, the marriage may not have been registered - or the record has been lost - who knows?

Not surprising though, given the fact that my wife's grandfather's birth is not registered but we know exactly when & where he was born from the baptism record.

Sorry that did not work out. There was another 1902 record in the Midleton registration district (which includes Aghada). I discounted this record because the possible spouse was Mary Walsh. Thought I would make you aware of this record.

  • Thankyou byegonedays! That's really helped (and the 'J' makes sense if her middle name is the same as her mother's). I think I've found her on the 1930 US census working as a servant for a family in Jersey City, NJ ... and on the 1940 US census married to Michael J Dunford with a boy Michael F (age 1) and a daughter Margaret M (age 2) - both born Massachusettes ... and the family are living in Boston. Definitely a few ticks there!

Not sure how to go about tracing their marriage as there does not seem to be a US equivalent of  FreeBMD.

There is a John Brown b. 1st march 1865 Aghada to Patrick Brown & Mary White. On 1911 census for Walsh Johannah has a sister Thomasina Cashman. Her marriage was registered in Middletown June 1908 to Patrick Cashman Vol 4 Page 339. Do you have name of Johanna Father & mothers maiden name?  Have a look at www.historicgraves.ie in Aghada Old Cemetery Grave ref CO-AGDO-217C you will find Patrick & Thomasina grave. There are 2 grave references for Brown CO-AGDO-088 & Browne CO-AGDO-004.  Patrick & thomasina have a grandson still living with a daughter also thomasina. If you need any more assistance contact me. regards Much more difficult locating the Walsh graves there are so many of this surname.

  • We visited the Old Aghada Graveyard a few weeks ago. Apparently the tiny chapel stopped being used about 1816  - but they continued to use the graveyard - including burying a few souls inside the ruins!  Subsequent baptisms, marriages & burials took place at the RC Church in Upper Aghada .. but that church was more recently replaced by the 1970s looking St Erasmus. The only part that remains from the old church is a bell tower.

I think Johanna was one of eight children (including Thomasina) born of Henry Walsh & Margaret Brien - who were married on 6 January 1861 in Aghada RC Church. Margaret's parents were Philip Brien & Margaret Collins who were married in the same church on 8 Sep 1836 & Margaret Collins address is “OF THE UNION”  .... I wonder if that meant she was born in, or was a resident of, Middleton Workhouse?  On the 1911 census Thomasina is reportedly married for 4 years so I was wary about the 1908 marriage. I think quite a few Aghada birth and marriage registrations have been lost - including John Brown & Johanna Walsh - and their two children.

Henry Walsh's father (according to my Walsh advisors on this site) was William Walsh who reportedly moved from Aghada to Maytown. I'm still waiting for confirmation of this. I find it very odd that William & brother Thomas would pay & have their names enscribed on their father James's gravestone (d.1821) and not include their other brothers names too. Having done a lot of genealogical research on our English ancestors (and made some howling errors on the way!) I'm now much more clinical & try not to make assumptions without hard facts. So many common surnames coupled with the lack of records makes tracing Irish ancestors an activity with many potential pitfalls !

John & Johanna Brown were still living in Upper Aghada in the 1920s - and possibly into the 1950s - because an old book including "The Story of the Lane" by Mary Walsh mentions the Brown family next door to Bessie Jones and Mary Flynn (nee Cotter)  - at right angles to the houses known as the Bakery and the Dairy.

  • Hello RICF,

I have information about John Brown and Johanna Walsh and their descendants in the United States. They are looking to make contact with descendants of Henry Brown, John and Johanna's other child. I would be very grateful if you could respond or make contact with me.

    Thank you.

  • Hello JoeB,

If you send me your e-mail address then I'll send you the info that I have on Henry Brown & his descendants.

It would be very interesting to find out what happened to Mary Brown, who she married & whether she has any living descendants.

    Kind regards
