Interested in any Hegarty records from Skibbereen area--especially interested in any Hegarty men who would consider participating in Hegarty Y-DNA project.

Sharon:
It is unlikely that a Hegarty from the Skibbereen area will see your post on this message board. Can I suggest that you go to the online Irish phonebook http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/# enter Hegarty in county cork. Make sure you use the Residential Tab. You should get 172 responses. At least 4 are in the Skibbereen area. You then may want to write to them about the DNA project.

You mention wanting Hegarty records from Skibbereen. Can you provide names and dtaes so that we may assist you with your family? Thanks.

Thank you Roger. I'm not looking for Hegartys living there now per se, but anyone who might be descended from Skibbereen area Hegartys.
Meanwhile, in recent months I have not been able to access the eircom phone directory--not sure what the problem is. I thought perhaps it was no longer available, but you seem to be suggesting that's not the case.

Sharon:
The online phone directory is working.

Not from my computer in Canada it isn't--it must be detecting the origin of the computer. As I said earlier, it did work for me until a few months ago, but does no longer. I did give it two more tries after you sent your message, but still no go!

I am descended from Hegartys from the Skibberern area (Leap). My great grandfather was born there in the 1850s, and migrated to Boston in the 1870s, where this branch of the family still resides.
I would be interested in hearing more about your DNA testing request.

I'm a descendant of the Hegarty line that lived in the Skibbereen area -- Schull is where he got married. I had my DNA done through Ancestry but I don't know if it looked at the male or the female line. My great grandfather was born there in 1851.

Hello Ellen,
Thank you for your reply. Our DNA project has been with Family Tree DNA. Our Y-DNA results are online at: https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Haggerty-Hegarty?iframe=ycolorized
If it is your own DNA that was tested, it would not have been a Y test. We are also looking at autosomal tests for both men and women who are Hegarty descendants. I would be interested in learning more about your ancestry. We have people who have dna matches with people whose ancestors were from Leap, Schull, Skibbereen and many other nearby locations. My email address is smhaggerty at shaw dot ca.

My granddad left Skibberean and migrated to Massachusetts in1913. He came to live and work with his cousins. He was raised in the small community of Kilkileen, any one related?

I am friends with some Hagerty's out here in California. The children of the late Mary and Jack from Quincy Ma. Same US family? My family also settled in Massachusetts from Cork (Heir Island) but they settled in Andover- later Cambridge.

Hello, I was reading through your post; I am related to Hegarty's from Aghadown (Skibbereen). My 2x great grandmother was Margaret Hegarty born circa 1837 to Patrick Hegarty and Ellen O'Brien. Margaret married a Denis Scanlan and they lived in Hollyhill. Margaret had a sister Catherine (1833) who married and O'Sullivan. She also had a brother Cornelius born circa 1836.

I also had my DNA tested and the results are with Ancestry.com. Last week Tyrone Bowes Ph.D. uploaded my raw DNA to Family Tree DNA. I have not had the chance to see what, if any, matches have been made. -Annie

Recently, I was told that my Hegarty relatives were the Boatmakers (Hegarty Boatyard) Oldcourt, Skibbereen, Co. If anyone has any information on these folks,I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Annie Keleher
