I chose this Parish because i saw last update was in June. I have no idea what Parish my great grandfather came from. His Certificate and Record of Death March 2 1902 Brooklyn NY has place of birth: Ireland, Father Name: Unknown, Mother Name: Unknown. It reads for Mother and Father Birthplace: Ireland. That may be the assumption since he was born in Ireland. His Obituary Notice reads he was a Native of Cork, Ireland.  He immigrated to the United States in 1860 according to information listed on the 1900 US Federal Census. He was married to Ann (no maiden name known) and they had 5 children. Daniel 1854, Mary Ann 1857, Dennis 1859, John 1862, Patrick 1867 and Henry 1870. What is interesting is that Patrick and family (Ann, Daniel and Dennis) appear in the 1860 US Federal Cenus and children have as their places of birth: U.S.. If the family immigrated with Patrick in 1860 why then place of birth for children as U.S.? I have not been able to locate any birth certificates for Patrick, Ann or any of the children. I have not been able to locate any marriage records for Patrick and Ann nor birth certificates for them as well. I have a Leary Tree at ancestry.com with as much inofrmation i have been able to gather for all of them here in the U.S.. I have tried to find a specific listing for Patrick on ship lists. His occupation was Carpenter. I have also tried to find Ann, Daniel, Mary Ann and Dennis.

As mentioned I chose this county because of update. Was is there no Message Board for the whole of Cork? Where should i navigate at this site? Any help would be most appreciated.

If I may lend assistance to anyone in search of family in Cecil County, Maryland specifically please ask. I can do searches also at ancestry for those who may need assistance for the United States.

The Leary or O'Leary is paternal. I am also searching for Dougherty (various spellings) on the maternal side.

I thank you, Michael Linton Leary

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We do have a page for Co. Cork http://www.irelandxo.com/ireland/cork   However, all messages end up on the main Ireland XO message board whether you posted in the county page or a parish page like Ardagh.

RC church records for Co. Cork are in two different data bases. Parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross are on a free Irish government site  www.irishgenealogy.ie  Parishes in the Diocese of Cloyne are on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. Your search is complicated because Leary is a very common surname in Co. Cork and you don't know the maiden name for Ann. I looked on both sites searching for the baptismal record for Daniel with no success. I would spend some time on the free site seeing if you can find a record.

You asked about the discrepancy with the two censuses. My guess is that the date provided for immigration in 1900 was a guesstimate forty years after the fact. Also, people in 1900 were less exact about ages and years.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Also, I live in Baltimore County.

  • Thank you so much for your reply. I will use what you have stated to do searches. You are correct about Census information. Memories, who is giving and who is recording are a factor in correctness. Having the name Leary is a blessing and a hindrance also for searches. I did do a ancestry DNA test. I will need to make a trip to Brooklyn NY to search records for that is the place that the Leary family made home.

  • My family was Leary from Adrigole area. When they came to America it appeared O'Leary. I found all of their RC records in Diocese of Kerry. They lived closer to Kerry than Cork. I found family back as far as 1770. It seemed they were fisherman in Bantry Bay. You may want to look in the RC records of Kerry Diocese. Joe O'Leary
