Robert Fitzgerald and Ellen Desmond of Ballynoe married in 1826. I know virtually nothing of their origins, I've simply found their marriage record so far. They lived in Ballynoe and Ballinhassig when they had Julia and Ellen. They went on to live in several other places around Cork city and near the city. I suspect he was either a tenant farmer or farm laborer, but I don't know. If these facts sound at all familiar, please let me know.

        • OH Eamon thank you so much. The lead on Ellen and the town of origin is so helpful. When I look at Irish records I always think to myself about the ODDS. What are the ODDS that you would have, for example, my  ggg grandfather Andrew Fitzgerald AND his wife Margaret Callahan AND his son Andrew Fitzgerald in any given place? And in this case  Andrew Fitzgerald had stated on an American marriage record that Andrew and Margaret C. were his parents names. So the "odds" worked in my favor.

Since all I know about Ellen or "Nelly" was her husband's name (Robert)and maybe that she was from Cork and near to the city, I have to guess that she came from a place near where she married given  the lifestyle in Ireland at the time....unless she didn't. You see the aforementioned Andrew was from Macroom where there are also LOTS of Desmonds. And I suspect Ellen's daughter Mary, born in 1831 in Monees (Moneygarry) was actually Mary Catherine, my g grandmother. AND that Catherine and her future husband Andrew F. could have been distantly or maybe not so distantly cousins.

I'm looking actually for a Catherine Fitzgerald born to Robert and Ellen between 1830 and 1834 in that same general area. So far I've only found Mary. I've been using the Roman Catholic parish records that recently became available online.

I will take a closer look at what you found and see what else I can piece together.

        • Eamon, if I use the birthdate of 1819 or 1816 (I found two records for an Ellen Desmond) in this parish, it puts her waaaay too young to have had the children I found.
